Don't think Longford can be accused of robbing our best lads. Surely these players are not being picked by the current Westmeath set-up and therefore currently surplus to requirements. BigSur (Westmeath) - Posts: 1149 - 07/02/2023 10:38:03 2456950 Link 1 |
I'm just naming them as prospects which they are. O'Reilly is a a very good footballer, but from all accounts hurling is his preferred sport from a young age. I seen an article after one of the Moate Cs games and it stated that he's a panelist for the senior hurlers already, although I don't know how true that is considering he hasn't featured one bit yet. I'm not trying to put any pressure on these lads, they have time to develop and see where things take them, but they are great prospects at the moment. If its not an ACL injury then their is hope he'll recover far quicker. The main thing is he takes his time with the recovery though.

Also I was referring to these young lads in relation to the u20 team, not the seniors. So I'm not expecting them to be saviours for the seniors whatsoever.

Exactly, Pat Burke is the only one that would make the top senior club teams in the county, never mind the county squad.

I think the keeper and centre back were Westmeath lads. Both Ringtown

Did Burke and Charles Flynn not start, Paddy Lynam from Plunketts played last year and there was a Paddy Lynam named at midfield.

Not as many as was mentioned in another comment anyways. Just two instead of 5 ringtown players.

An improvement on Ennis but still a yawning gap between ourselves and other top 8-9 teams. Wexford must have shot close to 25 wides and half of those scored would have left scoreline reaching worrying proportions. Visitors looked fitter and had a better game plan. Supporters from both sides were puzzled by home team's insistence on playing short puckouts and frees which frequently ended with player in possession losing the ball in our half. Missing Niall Mitchell is a factor but likes of Limerick and Cork will capitalise on those tactics. 1-4 from play from our starting forwards obviously not nearly enough but two of the starting forwards are defenders at club level. Jogger, Aaron Craig, Conor Shaw, Davy Glennon stood out. Cork next away and then Limerick and Galway at home. Certainly a tough series of matches. In regards to the game today, I was looking at the programme and noticed that fortune brought the u20's with him apart from David Williams LLG and Conor Gaffney C Pollard for a second week in a row why?? And also young Clarke from Castletown From what I hear David Williams and Clarke are flying at training. I have to say he done very well this morning when the u20's played Wexford in a challenge along with the likes of David O'Reilly Conor Gaffney etc. I tink he scored 2.08 or 2.09 not sure, I just don't see the point in him bringing these lads with him and not getting a run when they could have a got a full hours hurling into them at the u20 match this morning. There missing out with their own age group.Same last week he brought on Cunningham for 5 minutes that's no good to anybody. Maybe I'm wrong. pollard123 (Westmeath) - Posts: 16 - 12/02/2023 18:55:04 2457963 Link 1 |
With 11 subs he can bring a big squad but it's difficult to strike a balance. Peter Clarke warmed up today but I think he's too young and light to be introduced at this level. He'll be a regular county hurler for a decade or more if he's handled properly but the physique of the Wexford lads today would make me think twice about playing him. I agree that those lads are more important at under 20 level. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 1814 - 12/02/2023 20:09:13 2457985 Link 0 |
Who won the under 20 game pollard?

I think he might be trying to give them exposure to this level, however if they are only going to be getting 5-10 minutes here and there then it doesn't make much sense.

Westmeath won in the end I think it ended 3.16 to 1.08/1.09
