If them players went to Carlow looking to play, ye would jump at the opportunity to have them. We are bringing through more younger players than ye are having looked at your panel for Kehoe cup compared to ours. Sounds like your going to continue to harp on about Davy Glennon though.

We only play Carlow players on the Carlow team.

Just wondering why Westmeath have to go looking for players from
other counties ?

Westmeath Carlow free admission on Sunday at 2 in Dr Cullen park.

Should be a decent game.

This whole thing is a nonsense argument. We're not always bringing through younger players every year. For several years we've barely had a handful of new faces but more recently there's been much better work done with the U20s.

Carlow has a significantly smaller pool of players to pull from and very much punch above their weight based on this. Credit to them and the work they do in keeping the game alive. They'll give us a proper test and have had our number several times in the last 10 years.

Just a bit of pre season banter. Having strong Westmeath and Kerry teams is good for Carlow and vice versa. Not much point in us aiming for Division 1 hurling without a strong Division 2 to get past.

Carlow have a young team playing the Kehoe cup and so far the players have done well. Westmeath seem to have the same policy so it should be a good game.

Carlow vs Westmeath is always a tough tight battle and the two upcoming games will be no different.Carlovia you are making a big deal that we have one player born outside the county on our panel (I doubt he will play Sunday) who came to Westmeath looking to join as his Mother is a native of the county and he has business in Athlone. There are no others on the panel and Fortune to give him credit has used a lot of young players in our two games and I would think quite a few will play Sunday. We admire Carlow who have even a smaller base than ourselves but have the advantage of playing Kilkenny league and instead of criticizing each other perhaps developing joint policies with Laois would be a better idea.

I was just stating that in this Kehoe cup we've been using a lot of younger players from u20, and some fringe players getting a proper opportunity too so it's not like we are just looking outside the county for players like the Carlow poster was ridiculously stating. Its not nonsense from my part at all.

Jobber, was having a little dig at the posters who were criticising Kerry. My own opinion is that players should have to play club in the county they are transferring to.

It's not a big deal and we admire Westmeath as a true dual county unlike others who only do the big ball.

Looking forward to the season ahead and wish your lads well in Leinster.

Anyone at the game today? Seemed to be comfortable throughout but must not have finished greatly. You'd still have to be happy with a 5 pt win away to Carlow though and a bit of silverware to start off the year.

I was at the game and Westmeath and Carlow had plenty of wides in the first half especially, but Carlow were poor in their touch and distribution but credit where it is due and Westmeath never let Carlow settle and chased and harried all through the game. Both teams used plenty of subs and gave players time in the county Jersey but Westmeath deserved fully the win on a day where the pitch was excellent and both teams have the league next week to work on. Carlow I think have more work to do ! Well done to Westmeath ! Nice to have that a bit of silverware as the season starts in earnest nest week.

look its the Keogh Cup and its January and the league will be another story but we have brought on some of the young players such as Gillen,Mccormack,Williams and Cuneen as well as some of last years fringe players so competition for places will be at a higher level than before. I thought Meath,Kildare and Carlow were all poor but perhaps these youngsters are better than we think.Interesting team selection next Sunday against a Kerry who will as always be dificult.Todays gane was good for forty five minutes but after that we were sloppy ecen though always in charge.Clarke,Doyle,Glennon,Greville,Shaw ,Gallagher,O Brien, Mcnicholas and Kilian Doyle will all have to fight there way on to the team so that has to be positive.

Team named,
1. Noel Conaty
2. Darragh Egerton
3. Conor Shaw
4. Johnny Bermingham
5. Aaron Craig
6. Tommy Doyle
7. Charlie McCormack
8. Cormac Boyle
9. Ciaran Doyle
10. Kevin Regan
11. Joey Boyle
12. Niall Mitchell
13. Killian Doyle
14. Jack Gillen
15. Shane Williams

Good team, I think we should be playing jogger at full back instead of centre back. Aonghus Clarke, Derek McNicholas, Davy Glennon etc on the bench.
Tommy Gallagher, Niall O'Brien, Robbie Greville to come back in over the next couple of weeks.
Best of luck to the team tomorrow, a difficult game but hopefully we can come out with the points.

We did come out with the points but didnt play very well. Conditions were dificult but that was the same for both teams. With the wind in the first half apart from Mitchell and Boyle we offered nothing in the forwards. Second half was a big improvement but midfield remains a problem. The positives Gillen,Galvin and Regan are adding a lot to the team and Clarke and Glennon if not too badly injured will come on a lot from the game. O Brien, Greville, Gallagher and Clinton returning will also help.

Very positive start to the season. Some players coming through and others getting game time. Established players coming back too.

Ultimately I'd expect anything less than winning the league will be viewed as failure. Beating Laois (a very tough task at that) to stay in the Leinster c'ship would be a great step forward also.

Yeah I found we hurled a lot better against the wind for some reason. In the first half we didn't get going at all and didn't use the wind to our advantage whatsoever which was frustrating, had we done, I'd say we would have run out more comfortable winners than by 6 pts. In saying that, a win is a win and Kerry are no pushovers so you'd have to he happy so far. One thing I like about Joe Fortune is in post match interviews he never comes across as satisfied and always demands more. He's also created a greater competition for places, some lads were unlucky to miss out on the 26 and with the injured players to come back in too. We are in decent shape and hopefully we can keep improving as the weeks progress.

Good start to the season for Westmeath. Home advantage against Kerry minus their Kilmoyley contingent was a must-win, however.
