I noticed a thread on Sponsorship. Got me thinking, is Galway hurling the only GAA team that has only ever had one sponsor at senior level? I know its something that is often discussed in the hurling fraternity. We know the deal with the current sponsor is poor in relation to some other countys of similar profile. The Camogie team have went to the market and got a great new deal. Is it too simplistic to say its time for Galway hurling to find a new sponsor. Kilkenny were sponsored by Mahon McPhillips in the early 90s, so they have changed.

The perception among many Galway hurling folk is that it is a poor deal relative to some other counties but is that perception accurate? The fact is we do not know. Only those on the county board executive are really in the know. I think the current cycle of the Supermacs sponsorship ends either at the end of this year or next year. There are a couple of very successful businessmen on the Galway County Board -- none more so than the current county chairman -- and if there is a more lavish and generous sponsorship available to the county, one would expect they would pursue it. Yes the rumour from some years ago about the Comers wanting to sponsor Galway GAA with a more generous package has coloured people's perception of Supermac's involvement but to what degree was that rumour true and if it was true, what conditions were attached to it to make it unattractive to the county board? I'm sure the Comers are fine people but I doubt very much if they are Santa Claus either. There's no doubt we are a great county for rumours and they are usually not positive ones. All I'll say is, be careful what we wish for. It's like at election time....we always think the next government is going to be better than the last one and seldom is that the case! At any rate, it doesn't seem to me that lack of adequate finance is hindering the preparation of Galway hurling teams at the moment. What's really needed is to for a few more new young senior players to push through to complete the jigsaw and make us formidable All Ireland contenders in the coming years.

They have indeed, but not the same sponsor from the beginning. Galway hurling has. I'm not sure of any others.

Yeah but St Thomas's were only a point or two from winning it all so it seems like they're getting better with age. Hard to see anyone in Galway knocking them out.

What does it mean for the future of galway hurling and the smaller clubs in Galway that the bigger clubs whose seconds teams are now in the Intermediate hurling championship are picking up wins. Clarinbridge beating Annaghdown today and Turloughmore second team beat Ballindereen who were many peoples favourites for the championship having come down from Senior. You also have Craughwell and Castlegar. A quarter of Intermediate clubs are clubs second teams. Correct me if I'm wrong but all four junior A semi finalist last year were clubs second teams too.

Yes you are correct re the 4 junior a semi finalists also you look at claranbridge and turloughmore both have been very successful at minor and under 21/20 so have plenty of players who can't make there senior teams where as some of the intermediate teams can barely field underage teams and at at much lower grades
