Looking forward to the Clare/Mayo game. This is going to be a tough one for Mayo and will be played with championship intensity by Clare for the prize of getting to Div 1 on merit. Beat Mayo and the Munster game with Kerry will be approached on a high and even if they fail against the Kingdom their season will have delivered a substantial achievement in getting to the top tier. Mayo will need to be ready for the kitchen sink in Ennis because that's what's coming. Pericles (Mayo) - Posts: 2521 - 04/06/2021 17:15:47 2348250 Link 0 |
It won't be easy in Ennis for sure. However, I would expect Mayo to win. Clare rely heavily on Tubridy for scoring. He is top quality but Mayo carry greater overall scoring power. Better strength in depth too. More experienced. Clare have done really well. I would love to see them in Division 1 and beat Kerry too. The latter is unlikely and Mayo are better equipped for Division 1.

We wouldn't want to be going in with any level of complacency Benny. This to to me is Clare's season on the line and without disrespecting Sligo or Leitrim, it's going to be the hardest game Mayo will face till the Connacht final. We met Clare in 2017 in championship and they gave a more experienced Mayo side huge problems in the first half. Goals early in the second half broke them, but I was nervous up to that point with one of their halfbacks (Malone?) probably the best player on the pitch in the first half. Not to gain promotion will be a disappointment if it happens, but it won't define Mayo's season. You'd have to think that Clare will have more to gain from the win, plus Colm Collins is a ridiculously underrated manager. Imagine if he was Galway's boss?

Absolutely. Any complacency and you will lose. I think failure to get promotion would be a disaster for Mayo. You need to be in Division 1. You are one of the top counties and if you spend any length of time outside of Division 1 then you slip backwards and it is hard to get back up. Took Armagh and Meath years and with Cork it is clear we are struggling big time to get up. You can't win an All Ireland from Division 2. This is a big game for Mayo . You are spot on with Colm Collins. Clare are now comfortable Division 2 side. That is not condescending in any way Given their resources and where they came from, it is a big achievement. Their are far bigger counties (Cork/Down) and two current provincial champions that can't say that. I would have Colm Collins take the Cork job (never mind Galway!) any day... bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 04/06/2021 22:17:09 2348315 Link 2 |
Flynn was flying against Laois, scored 2-5, Kevin 1-1, Neil 0-4, Luke 1-0, If Dan was there he might have got a few scores too I'd say!

Probably overall Mayo have that more strength and depth alright. But we are not fully reliant on Tubridy for scorers, Eoin Cleary has been or main score getter for the last year or so. While Jamie Malone probably will be back from injury for the Mayo game which will give us another attacking threat. The thing is a team has to be very disciplined against us as both Cleary from the left foot and Tubridy off the right are both very good free takers, so any free given in and around the 45 or even just outside the 45 on either side of the field is a scoring chance in the form both Cleary and Tubridy are in at the moment. Ya. You are right. Eoin Cleary is a fine player too. I didn't mean to be dismissive. For the record I hope you beat Mayo. I was hoping Cork would beat ye by four points so we would a chance to play Mayo and have a crack of Division 1. I think we would be well beaten had that opportunity arisen. I just think Mayo are overall a better side than Clare.

Know I didn't think you were being dismissive even though probably some people in the media might be at times. But sure maybe that is used as motivation at times for the team. Anyway Mayo probably will be a bit too strong for us but I prefer to play them then Kerry as we don't have that mental block against Mayo as we aren't used to getting beat by them every year. That's what drives me mad about the provincial championships we would love to even play some of the ulster teams or the Connacht teams in an open draw formal as we wouldn't have the same of them as we would have had against Kerry, which I'm sure is the same in Leinster for teams playing Dublin. Finally you would never know and I live in hope, and maybe Colm and the team can take inspiration from Cavan's win against Donegal in the Ulster Final last year. Must have been Kevin I was thinking of, not Daniel. Well whoever they need to be stopped. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 06/06/2021 20:32:45 2348708 Link 0 |
I think Mayo will win this game by as much as they want.... they will have far too much class for Clare... I believe Clare would be better served staying in Div2 as going up will almost certainly mean relegation... It happened us twice in a row and now we are in a battle to stay out of Div4.... I disagree. You are looking at league and you are having a tough time now, but look at championship. It brought you on and you won an Ulster. League is not the be all and end all. The experience of 4 years or so stood to you. I think Clare should be aiming for Munster Championship, as should Cork, Tipperary and maybe Limerick. This year may be difficult with Kerry on high alert after last year. However, a normal season, with back door and Clare maybe even having a season in Div 1, they would have a great chance. Reality is, Cork, Tipp, Clare and Limerick are nowhere near all ireland contenders at the moment, but could have a realistic shot at a Munster. That has to be the aim, whilst Kerry look for all Ireland's. BaldyBadger (Cork) - Posts: 313 - 08/06/2021 12:50:21 2348960 Link 3 |
Mayo will win this ,but at Arms length. Circa 5/6 points. BeJasus (UK) - Posts: 383 - 08/06/2021 17:16:48 2349049 Link 1 |
Huge game this weekend. Nothing but a win will do IMO. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 09/06/2021 14:36:53 2349214 Link 1 |
Probably. I was more replying to somebody who suggested Clare were better off not winning and staying in Division 2. Mayo will rightly be favourites. However, I do think Clare would be their toughest game in the division out of the 7.

Last time I got three out of four so this weekend I am going with: Mayo v Clare......................Mayo Kildare v Meath..................Kildare Down v Laois......................Down Cork v Westmeath.............Cork Ollie2 (Louth) - Posts: 1038 - 09/06/2021 21:19:59 2349290 Link 1 |
Clare have been very competitive for a number of years and have been making steady progress. They have some fine footballers and I expect them to push Mayo all the way. Unfortunately they will have to get past Kerry to make any progress in the championship and that is highly unlikely. It is too bad for them that there is no back-door this year because they would be serious contenders for getting to the super 8s.

Big weekend of games. This is probably the most important game of the year for the Leinster teams and Clare given the presence of Dublin in Leinster and Clare's first round against Kerry. brianb (Kildare) - Posts: 439 - 10/06/2021 11:01:55 2349333 Link 0 |
