Cork are in a relegation play off despite winning 2 from 3. Ridiculous. johnocarroll17 (Limerick) - Posts: 408 - 30/05/2021 22:57:28 2346747 Link 0 |
Would agree with you, think ye would struggle more with Clare, think ye are happier meeting Kildare.

Well, your reply to the post that said "I think Kildare have a genuine chance" was "hmm I don't think so", so I just figured. Anyways, that's a fair assessment you've made there. I'd say Meath probably will be slight favourites. In my view, if Kildare have a full panel to chose from, barring a complete mental collapse (e.g. the last time we played), we'll win this one. Should be a great game! Sweetspot (Kildare) - Posts: 349 - 30/05/2021 23:43:33 2346761 Link 1 |
Clare vs Cork was a very good game of football to watch. It could have gone either way. Glad to see Clare make the semi-final. Mayo will be a solid test for them. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2225 - 31/05/2021 05:45:18 2346786 Link 0 |
Hmmm I think that's exactly what you said Royaldunne. Pull your neck in a bit Meath are hardly world beaters. jonno (Kildare) - Posts: 261 - 31/05/2021 07:50:08 2346793 Link 4 |
Bonus territory for Kildare so they should be able to play with a certain amount of freedom. Still not firing on all cylinders though and look short of a bit of confidence, naturally enough, but perhaps it'll click against Meath. JJ1 (Kildare) - Posts: 547 - 31/05/2021 12:05:02 2346884 Link 0 |
In fairness we have had some decent runs in the qualifiers pushed Kerry to 4 points in 2014 and should have beaten Kildare in 14. 2015 we never really got going crippled with injuries we had six or seven forwards injured in the lead up the Cork game that year which has been the only year we have played Cork in championship. 2016 had a brilliant run in the qualifiers got to the All Ireland Quarter Final. 2017 we had a great to beat Kerry were a point up about 10 minutes into the second half with Kerry down a man Jamie Malone rattled the crossbar which would have put 4 up and in a strong position. While he also missed an early goal chance against Mayo in 17 which would have put us 8 points against them, which really shows that you have to take your chance against the better team. In 2018 we had a lot of new players in the panel as there had been a lot players from 2017 that were no longer in the panel for various reasons, such as retirement, taking a break, emigration and injury, so we had a lot of newcomers and inexperienced players playing against Kerry and we took an awful beating against them. We also threw away a 4 point injury lead against Armagh in 18 in a game we ended up losing by 4 points. In 19 we started stugglish to the Munster Championship but had a decent run in the qualifiers and we could have beaten Meath to make the super 8's. Last year we never got going after the covid restart to both the league and championship as our performances were poor. We can be a mixed bag and even though we have stayed up at times in the league we have struggled for consistency we can have a great win one week and the next play awful, like in the league in 2020 we had a great win at home to Kildare in tough conditions, then the next week we go play away to Roscommon where we only score 4 points. So that probably sums us up. This year is probably one of the only times we have been consistent in the league as we have put together 3 good performances and now seem to have a stronger panel, in the years gone by we have had very good starting 15 but at times in the past there has been a drop off in the standard of quality coming from the bench and players that have come off the bench have struggled to make an impact off the bench. Actually that point I was making is that I actually think Kildare could have taken mayo particularly with the match in newbridge if that's where it was played. You did it before with what would have been a more hardened mayo team. Apologies if it was taken up incorrectly. I do think it's a harder match been a derby game and all that goes with it, won't be a big win for either, just feel Meath have returned to winning these tight games over past couple of years more than loosing them

Indeed we not. I explained what I meant. But sure no pleasing some people. That been said I still think Meath will win

So newbridge it is. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 31/05/2021 15:04:43 2347013 Link 0 |
True. Though the rules were there for everyone. Cork knew they had to win by 4 and anything less was a defeat - in effect. Clare knew the same. I have no complaints about this. Well done to Clare. I think Mayo will beat them

Each time Meath and Kildare play a Division 2 game it seems to be ultimately a de-facto promotion play-off. 2017 Kildare won well and went up; 2019 Meath won by a point and went up. At the start of the league I'd have thought Meath would win this one but I'd favour Kildare a bit more now. Last years championship match was a strange one. Credit to the Meath sideline in that game; they spotted the space, changed tactics and exploited it. That space doesn't seem to be there this year. Kildare's total conceded is the second lowest (to Derry) across all the leagues. Kildare by 2. brianb (Kildare) - Posts: 439 - 01/06/2021 10:31:20 2347305 Link 1 |
Indeed could be a very close game. If there is gaps the Meath forward line will exploit them. I can see Newman starting this game , which will be a huge boost for frees, him and Morris will be the ones taking them. Colgan will be back in goals which is the better option, really looking forward to this game, while I do think it will be a lot closer than last year's Leinster game, I don't know if Kildare have the defense to stop Morris, Newman, O'Sullivan, Conlon (when he comes on) while Kildare have marquee forwards I think keoghan, harnan McGill and lavin will keep them quieter than Kildare will at the other end. Discipline needs to improve though in back line, can't risk a black card in this match. That would be my worry.

Before the game, I would have said a 1 point win in Ennis but not going through would not be the worst and showed a bit of toughness and form. However, the manner of the last 10 minutes, when it was there if they could kick on was disappointing. The sending off was very silly and made it very difficult. It was obvious we needed a goal in the last 5 minutes. We should've pushed Maguire and Deane into the mixer and tested them. We just slowly moved the ball s as id made it easy to defend the 4 points. I feel that if the big ball option was there, we could have built pressure and potentially used that threat to make scoring points easier. Anyway, if they can get the win in 2 weeks and then concentrate on the championship, that would not be a disaster. They need to up the work rate massively over the coming 2 months. I think Jones is a big loss to Meath, could swing it Kildares way, Meath under McEntee are a more determined and resilient team than recent Meath teams and Kildare need to match them in that regard

Jones is a huge loss, hopefully we can cope without him. But yes it won't be easy. Flynn is on fire so he will have to be closely marked. If we are to win royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 02/06/2021 13:29:40 2347692 Link 0 |
Agree with most of this. I think though not getting to semi finals is a disaster. We are not making progress. In the key games against Kildare and Clare we started well. The game is open, we have a good spread of scorers and things look OK. But when pressure is applied , we cannot up the pace. Actually the pace slows with theamount of backward passing. As you said, we needed a goal on Sunday but there wasn't a sniff of it. The sending off was not helpful but it was deserved. Hurley has had bad luck with injuries and I admire his dedication and determination to get back to fitness. He has ability too but this isn't good enough. He may be there now as we have a real lack of good scoring forwards. Dineen and Gore not getting much game time. I would like to see them get more but that said I am not convinced either are of the quality that we need to be competitive. Our backs are OK. We were punished on Sunday for some very soft frees acknowledged by the commentators. The ref was brutal in fact. But we didn't help ourselves. A win over Westmeath will not be anything to celebrate. A defeat will be absolutely unacceptable. There can be no future for the management team if that happens. We have the championship to focus on. Can't say I am optimistic based on performance so far. bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 03/06/2021 00:10:00 2347873 Link 0 |
Now is that Neill, Luke, Kevin or Daniel? "Flynn" doesn't really work when you're talking about Kildare

I meant Daniel. But I see ur point

Daniel Flynn hasn't played in last two games and came off injured in the first one. What makes you think he's on fire?? St.Conleth (Kildare) - Posts: 1724 - 04/06/2021 10:22:52 2348152 Link 3 |
