I appreciate it is a difficult job and some of the rule changes will take time but the basic errors were cringe. Galway football folk by and large don't boo officials from my experience but the 2nd half very frustrating from our perspective. Easy to cry foul when one loses but win or lose poor officiating needs to be called out as difficult as the job is for refs. If Maurice Deegan is to be classed as a poor ref then we are in trouble. The penalty decision is a moot point as it was brilliantly saved and didn't cost Galway anything. Refereeing debate aside was a good game and result for Galway who can now go to Kerry pressure free, and really go at them, could be one to watch. Not sure how Monaghan deserved a draw on the balance of play, Galway created a lot more, were screwed by the referee and still came out on top against Monaghans first team. Galway would have to clean up in front of goal going forward. Some phenomenal frees by CMcM to keep Monaghan ticking over. Official Guide: Amend Rule 2.12 Mark - Rules of Football - Official Guide 2019 (Part 2) as follows: THE ADVANCED MARK Advance Mark: • Clean catch on or inside the 45m line • Delivered by attacking player on or beyond the Opposing teams 45m line • Ball must travel at least 20m • Referee awards the mark by blowing their whistle • Player claims the mark by putting his arm in the air. • If claiming the mark, he has 15 secs to take the free kick • If the mark is awarded within the 13m line the free kick is to be taken from 13m line opposite where the mark is claimed. • In Exceptional Circumstances Player unable to avail of the mark, his nearest teammate designated by Referee, can take the mark and may score form it. • If the player does not claim the mark, he may play on immediately • If he plays on, he cannot be tackled for 4 steps or the length of time to travel 4 steps outside the large rectangle - see exceptions. • Exception: If the mark is claimed within the large Rectangle inclusive of small Rectangle and he decides to play on he can be tackled immediately.
