Looks like it'll be a tight championship this year. Menlough,Oughterard,Athenry,Claregalway and Kilkerrin/Clonberne will all fancy their chances. The old reliables in the shape of K/C, Menlough, Athenry and Claregalway but Oranmore could stamp their authority. Will be interesting to see if Glenamaddy can bounce back after a poor year. Rumour has it there has been a managerial casualty in Dunmore after they fell foul to a weak Claregalway team late last month but that may not be true. Great to have it back. I would fancy Oranmore under Gerry Fahy to cause a few upsets and get far this season. Athenry and K/C would be my tips to win it outright this year but was talking to a lad from Claregalway last week who was telling me training is going really well with big numbers there recently and the team are quietly confident that this could be their year. Always a huge bonus if you can win first day out, takes a lot of pressure off. Expect Spiddal to beat Brendans well K/C should beat Dunmore but only if at their best, apparently Shane Walsh unplayable in league last time out. Local derby though so will be hardy. Aran to win handy enough , tough team and plenty of good footballers. Glenamaddy will give plenty to Athenry , with Flynn out for Athenry maybe a surprise on the cards ,Glenamaddy have a very young team though . Will only be a point or two in it either way. With the exception of st. Brendans / Spiddal game, all games were close which shows how competitive the intermediate grade is. Nice to see a couple of upsets too. Athenry beaten by glenamaddy, athenry missing flynn, but glenamaddy missing midfielder geraghty and full back hynes so it was no fluke. As I predicted Oranmore look like dark horses. Was at their game Sunday and I was seriously impressed with their fitness levels and doggedness to get back into the game when trailing after the 1st half. Gerry Fahy showing his worth again as one of the county's best managers. Big win for Glenamady too at the weekend. Don't think anyone called that one. Just looking at the scores across the rest of the championship and Claregalway's comfortable 3 point win over a fancied Oughterard team certainly catches the eye - No doubt they have positioned themselves as early outright favourites to go all the way imo - as long as they avoid bogey team Menlough lol! Athenry look like they will struggle especially with mcveigh out injured for the summer. dunmore making a big statement of intent for the year.
