Coyne and McBrien are just two players from the entire squad. Neither of them close to the levels of a Keith Higgins, Lee Keegan, Chris Barret, Colm Boyle. They stand out because the rest of the squad look poor in comparison because they're badly coached. I think there's definitely more potential in the current group of players than they were let show. Aido will probably retire now but what other county wouldn't try giving him a lot more ball inside? The balance in the forwards is awful. Ryan overused, but never hides. Fergal Boland a sub for most games. Why, when most of the forwards were poor? I don't think they're as good as the '16/'17 crop but still capable of better with better coaching and men on the line. If our two best games were under Rochford they should look to clearing out the management and getting Rochford as manager and Andy Moran as forwards coach. But I think Andy will have a few options after this year's championship and if I was him would be in no hurry to take a Mayo job.

fluke result...pfff But its the same for Derry they improved no end and yet they are out too. The truth is that this championship is wide open and a lot of the teams left in it can rightly have an eye on it. But we have to loose good teams somewhere along the way and its making this year probably one of the greatest of all. I'd say prepare for more big upsets as that's what the new rules have brough. The one criticism i would have off Mayo is that a lot of teams have changed their teams setup and personnel and evolved to deal with the new rules. Mayo are still picking 6 backs, 2 midfielders and 6 forwards. the 11 on 11 demands a different approach. e,g, look at Con at midfield for Dublin for the throw-in.. It requires a different approach, more dynamic. Mayo were probably getting there but it was too late. ponger (Cavan) - Posts: 583 - 16/06/2025 15:29:59 2618359 Link 0 |
Come on Belclare it's time to get over that Mayo lady. There's plenty more single ladies out there. Thumbs up Cumann1 (Mayo) - Posts: 78 - 16/06/2025 15:45:04 2618371 Link 0 |
So obsessed with Belclare, who's forgotten more about Mayo football than you'll ever know. Even replying to yourself accusing yourself of being Belclare.... link GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 8096 - 16/06/2025 15:57:22 2618385 Link 0 |
It's not just Coyne and McBrien though. Look at Donnacha McHugh's performance yesterday on Murphy before he got injured.. Enda Hession too. The reputation of Mayo players from previous eras seems to grow as the years go by. They failed in many big games too lest we forget. Boyle, Barrett and Higgins had many tough outings out against the top forwards. Even Lee Keegan had a few. Why on earth would we give rochford the management gig again?! How many years have Buckley and himself been involved at this stage? Completely fresh management team needed. Andy seems to be getting good reviews for playing positive attacking football with Monaghan. That's as a coach however so maybe someone else required to manage. Another one of your aliases Belclare. You slipped up again though, you don't honestly think a real Mayoman would complement you Belclare do you? Cumann1 (Mayo) - Posts: 78 - 16/06/2025 16:12:08 2618403 Link 0 |
I dunno why people engage with this account, constantly posting on Galway and Mayo threads and never on football or hurling just childish aul *****. if we all just ignore the account theyll have nothing to enage with as they obviously dont have a clue about actual GAA anyway.

The game has changed this season unless you haven't noticed. There was not 8 seconds left because Donegal scored probably 40 seconds after that score. The game now ends after the hotter when the ball goes dead. Mayo had control of the ball, they should have managed the situation, so that they had the last play. Once they scored before the hooter, they were out of control and had to rely on a Donegal error. That is the margin of top level sport. It was bad game management. If they needed the win, I would understand it. BaldyBadger (Cork) - Posts: 318 - 16/06/2025 16:29:10 2618416 Link 1 |
Purely because Rochford got a bounce out of this squad that McStay didn't. I know it's unlikely. But would be happy to see a new man in. You know yourself Dan, they could leave the same management team in place for another bad year. All the players you reference are defenders. I know they're better defenders than coaches let them be but we conceded so many handy scores it's hard to be impressed with any defenders for 2025. I think they overcomplicated the new rules and the arc for forwards and defenders. Too many times attackers exploited the space created by too many around the arc and waltzed goalwards through us. Sligo game sticks out in my mind for that. I think there could be a manager or two who would look at our squad and say we're not realising our potential and relish the job.

People saying taking the shot was bad management is absolutely ridiculous. They might not have worked a better chance. It was a great score. The bad management came as soon as Patton picked the ball up following the score. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 8445 - 16/06/2025 18:26:09 2618475 Link 0 |
There was always going to be a bounce after the Cavan game.. it could hardly be any worse! Rochford was basically joint manger with mcstay for the last 3 years if we're being honest. I referenced defenders because you were talking about Barrett, Higgins, Boyle and Keegan. I would also argue that Mattie Ruane has reached a much higher level at intercounty level than Parsons / S O'Shea ever did.. Ryan is up there with Cillian/Andy at their peaks etc. On balance the Mayo team probably was stronger 10 years ago but I don't believe it's the huge difference some people make out. There's also no opposition team at the level of Jim Gavin's Dublin. I agree the big difference now is coaching/setup. We need a new management team to come in and do what Jim McGuiness is doing or James Horan did in 2011. In fairness he did something similar in 2019/20 as well during his second term. That is utter nonsense. The opportunity presented itself and Boland took his score which was correct. He had no idea if there was a minute left or whether it was 6 seconds. How was he to know ?. They had the last kick after the hooter against Galway in the Connacht final and kicked it wide. Nobody expected Donegal to go for the winner because a draw would have the same implications for them as a win but credit them for their winning mentality that they went for the juggler. If the kickout went horribly wrong and Mayo got possession, Mayo could have gone for the winner, claimed second place and pushed Donegal to third and have them travelling this weekend.
