Another big win today in Kerry Blackbog (Carlow) - Posts: 755 - 27/04/2025 20:44:49 2604761 Link 0 |
Another big scoring win alright. How good were Kerry? A lot of unfamiliar names on their team sheet. That is 2 big scores against Down and Kerry and back to back. It looks like a 2 horse race but you never know either for certain who will take points from one another. Laois also put up a very big score against Down and in Ballycran too which is no small feat. Hopefully our players will keep their feet on the ground and not be swayed by their margins of victory to date. 3 more games to go. Plenty of hurling yet. carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1875 - 28/04/2025 12:23:35 2604964 Link 0 |
Good win for the minor hurlers away v Kidare. Great to see players from so many clubs involved. Tough game away to Westmeath to come but they're still there. Minor footballers competed well during the week too which was also a positive. Senior hurlers had it easier than expected v Kerry. They're going along nicely, hopefully another mcdonagh final on the way but take each game as it comes. Unusedsub (Carlow) - Posts: 116 - 28/04/2025 16:53:02 2605115 Link 0 |
Well done to Rathvilly gaa for taking up the 'Hurling starter pack' initiative. It will take a few years to get hurling going in the area but with good volunteers and hard work Rathvilly have the potential to be a solid base for both football and hurling for years to come. The initiative as far as I understand involves the HDC supplying a number of hurls, helmets etc with the club starting at nursery level. This will be followed by a commitment to start participation in go games the following year. It's a slow burner but hopefully it's effective in rathvilly and other areas whom have availed of it.

in scéala iontach! Tá Rath Bhile tuillte ag moladh mór. I'm really looking forward to seeing them competing for hurling titles again - like they did in the 1980s as Kevin Barry's.

I always thought that was a great name for a club from Rathvilly. I think they had Tullow in with them as well as part of Kevin Barry's? It's a pity it didn't last and the great name for a club from that area disappeared.

Yes, and some Clonmore too, I think. They definitely won a junior title in the late 80s. They beat my own club's junior team in the semi final. So many teams from that era are gone. Some for the better (Ballymurphy) and some for the worse (Fintans and Parnells), CARPS (Carlow) - Posts: 853 - 02/05/2025 14:47:45 2606306 Link 0 |
Various hurling initiatives have been tried over many years with some.auccess. First and firmest Kevin Barry's.was a decent junior club who provided games for all sort of players from the Rathvily general area. Some who backboned that initiative were local primary school teachers who played and were pivotal in its success. I personally salute those behind the initiative. But there are very very strong objections to any form of hurling becoming a reality in Rathvilly, and many are heavily involved in Rathvilly football.. In Carlow like many other counties football is very strong and football people want nothing to do with any hurling initiative. I can recount many scenarios in Carlow where hurling has been given no support and in fact where football clubs plus others I'm positions of responsibility actively worked to BURY hurling. carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1875 - 03/05/2025 18:29:06 2606478 Link 0 |
I understand what you're saying and I couldn't disagree but it sounds like there must be some interested people over in rathvilly atm. Hopefully they can succeed in the face of such opposition.

Why would anyone have "strong objections" to hurling or want to "BURY" it? You'd swear football was some sort of a religious cult. Anyway, the biggest issue for football in Carlow is the rising popularity of soccer. Not hurling. When the soccer goes calendar year, I'm hearing that even more clubs won't be able to field at underage. This antipathy towards hurling is absurd. It's a simple proven fact that the strongest GAA clubs are DUAL. CARPS (Carlow) - Posts: 853 - 03/05/2025 20:33:53 2606503 Link 0 |
Soccer has always been strong in Carlow- no doubt about that. But carps- you obviously have had your head in the proverbial sand if you have not realised that the biggest threat to hurling is the big ball and its the football one and not the soccer one! Ask any hurling person outside of MLR and St Mullins and they will give you plenty of examples of football killing hurling. Training sessions and challenge games being put on at the same time as hurling coaching. And that is just for starters. The real situation is that Carlow hurling has progressed despite the football and the efforts and lack of effort of many officials begars belief. Ask a few around and see what they come up with !!! It will be a miracle if hurling starter packs are just the beginning in Rathvilly. Forces stronger than one or two have buried hurling in the past and continue to actively discourage or rather ensure that hurling does NOT take hold.. in plenty of so called GAA clubs. carlowman (Carlow) - Posts: 1875 - 03/05/2025 21:59:44 2606523 Link 0 |
Hard luck to the minor hurlers who existed the Championship to Westmeath yesterday. Didn't make the game so can't really comment on it but it seemed close enough up to half time & Westmeath pulled away in the end. A big improvement this year with wins against Kerry & Kildare as we were starting to lose to them regularly the last few years. Even in defeat to a very good laois team we were winning at half time. They unbelievably beat Offaly yesterday by 31 points. That is some score against a county who consider themselves to be returning to the big time. Unfortunately for them one swallow doesn't make a summer. carlo (Carlow) - Posts: 258 - 04/05/2025 12:25:42 2606590 Link 0 |
I wasn't at the game either but seen there was only 2 points in it at half time. Was our fitness an issue or maybe other factors at play? I know there's some very talented hurlers in the group so glad to see them win some matches at that age group. I'd echo what you said carps, would be great if they stayed together as a group and maybe kicked on further at u20 level.

Where is my head in the sand? Please read again. The context. I am well aware that some people in Carlow football circles are more hostile to hurling than they are to soccer or rugby, It's absurd. CARPS (Carlow) - Posts: 853 - 04/05/2025 14:00:38 2606602 Link 0 |
