Johnny Doyle made a shock return to the Allenwood colours in the Kildare SFC last weekend, only for it to end with a serious injury.
The Kildare legend announced his retirement from club football at the age of 46 last September, but returned for last Friday’s Kildare SFC preliminary round clash with Clogherinkoe after Allenwood had lost all of their Division 1 League games. However, he failed to reappear for the second half after sustaining a suspected dislocated shoulder which required hospital treatment.
To compound matters, Allenwood lost the game by a point, 3-11 to 1-16, after being 13 down at half-time.
One of his county’s greatest ever players, Doyle won Leinster SFC honours with the Lilywhites in 2000 and an All-Star in 2010 before announcing his inter-county retirement in 2014.
Over the next decade, he continued to excel for Allenwood and helped them to county and Leinster club IFC titles in 2023 to add to the SFC medal he won with them in 2004.
