Two former All-Ireland club champions suffered senior relegation at the weekend.
Portumna, who won six Galway and four All-Ireland SHC titles since joining the senior ranks in 1992, will ply their trade in the new Galway PIHC in 2026 after losing their SHC ‘B’ quarter-final to Ballinderreen by 2-14 to 0-24 on Saturday. Joe Canning and his team-mates needed to win the SHC ‘B’ – which is being discontinued after this year – to secure promotion to the top-flight for 2026.
In the Galway SHC quarter-finals, Oranmore/Maree will meet Turloughmore, Tommie Larkins will take on St Thomas’, Sarsfields will face Craughwell and Loughrea will square up to Clarinbridge.
It’s also the end of an era for Cora Staunton’s Carnacon who relinquished their Mayo LGFA senior status following a relegation playoff defeat to Hollymount yesterday. Carnacon enjoyed an incredible run of success over the past two decades which included six All-Ireland wins.
