Hooter to signal immediate end of football matches next season

The clock/hooter system, which was introduced to Gaelic football this year, will signal an instant end to games in 2026.

The rule change comes after the CCCC (Central Competitions Control Committee) approved a recommendation from the Football Review Committee to end games at the hooter. This had previously been the rule before a change was made prior to the All-Ireland Championship that games would only end when the ball went dead.

However, this resulted in games slowing down towards the end of the halves, with the attacking team passing the ball around until a scoring opportunity arose. A prime example of this was David Clifford’s two-pointer for Kerry on the stroke of half-time against Donegal in the All-Ireland SFC final.

Meanwhile, Leinster GAA has decided not to use the Croke Park hooter system for Saturday’s Leinster club SFC final between Ballyboden St Enda’s and Athy. The time-keeping duties will also fall to the referee and his officials for the upcoming Leinster club IFC and JFC finals as was the case in previous rounds.
