Players To Improve The County Panel in 2016?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Deanmartin I agree with you about needing to play a quick brand of attacking football . Use the full with of the pitch . 2 wing half backs who can get quick accurate ball into the forward line . 2 wing half backs also capable of defending properly. I firmly believe centre half back is made for McKiernan? Any thoughts? He would be accurate setting up attacks , he can break a tackle, the way he is used this year he just goes off soli running up blind alleys. At centre half back he could control that area. He's worth a try there because til we solve that problem we going nowhere.

I wouldn't say McKiernan is a very obvious choice at CHB. Whatever about vision and ball carrying skills a CHB must as a basic have good game reading skills and must offer some sort of protection to full back line. We've badly missed Alan Clarke IMO- even this year when Rory Dunne was fit he was getting exposed a lot more than previously and was finding himself in areas of the field he shouldn't be in. A CHB who likes to wander is well and good but he must choose his moments wisely.

Foolsgold take the blinkers off and look at the Monaghan game. This is the game we had 8 months to prepare for. After 13 mins we led 4-1 . At half time we led 9-7. After 47 mins we led 13-9. Then the big collapse we scored 2 points in the final 23 min plus injury. Now you get my drift about too defensively . Don't care what anybody says but in the final 23 minutes those players played to instructions from the sideline.

I think the biggest mistake that was made in that match was not bringing on Barry Reilly when Martin Reilly was black-carded. it seemed they rushed Mickey Lyng on instead. never understood that decision.

Deanmartin martin Reilly plays very deep when he plays for killygary.
Agree the manager should have left.
As for Johnston he is prob the best forward in the county but we still should have some pride and play players who want to play for Cavan.

Cavan scored 15 points against Monaghan, 2-22 against London and 1- 16 against Roscommon. Yeah they should stop being so defensive.

This is a mindset I've encountered a few times on here. It's almost like you're celebrating a loss? Does the fact that we were beaten in two of those games bear any significance for you foolsgold? Or are you just happy to score a certain amount to prove how our gameplan is evolving? (It's evolving alright, on a downward trajectory). Even the local media at the time claimed the manager got his tactics spot on against Monaghan, it appears some people didn't notice the fact that we lost.

Awwwwnow.... McKiernan would be the last person I would play ch back... He goes missing for too long a periods in midfield so Heaven help us if he was CHB...

I would like to see some of these lads get looked at.
Shane gray Kingscourt - had an unbelievable championship for kingscourt and probably will win senior player of the year.
Barry Reilly Kingscourt - I know he has been on the panel but don't think he's ever got a fair crack probably 1 of the best free takers in Ulster let alone the county.
Padraig Faulkner Kingscourt - Very good strong player and will be around for a lot of years.
Jamie Leahy Castlerahan - Everytime I've seen him he has done wel good shot stopper and seems like has a good range in kick outs long and short.
Barry Cusack Castlerahan - Had A very good championship until got injured in semi final looks like a very good full back.
Oisin o Connell Castelrahan - I don't even know what to say how is the lad not already on the panel pace to burn and can get scores from everywhere.
Raymond Galligan Lacken - Would like to see him get a crack out the field joy to watch some of the scores he kicks are ridiculous was a fiasco having him in goals last year.
Brendan Murray Killygarry - Had an excellent year as captain of Killygarry this year and was a joy to watch looks like he likes to get stuck in.
Joe Masterson Killeshandra - Another man that had an excellent year Killeshandra probably wouldn't have got as far without him great shot stopper but kick out would have to improve.
Thomas Oreilly Killeshandra - Desreves another crack at inter county has a great engine and would run all day and can take a score.

Bigredmachine. I'd have Barry Reilly the pick of those and I've been disappointed that he hasn't been involved as much as I'd hoped. Not sure I see a very obvious vast improvement on what we already have with the rest but of course there's potential there. Incidentally what positions would you earmark for them and who do you see as options for our biggest handicap- the inside forwards? Who will win ball, lay off, support and score?

I was talking about the score average - Ned Stormcorw, not celebrating a loss. They attacked more in 2051 but also conceded more.

Kingscourt as County Champions scored 5 points yesterday. The County players didn't perform. Whats your answer for that?

There is a lot of talk about Barry Reilly but I think that we need to look away from him. Mainly because he had a very good year and will be involved. He didn't take his chance in the past but has matured and I think he will be involved in the league for sure. He has a great chance actually of making the slot on the 40 his own as we dont have quality there.

Bigredmachine has listed some people who are worth looking at and there are more. But when we see what happened Kingscourt there yesterday, I think it should make any Cavan man worried. I know Kingscourt were not fancied yesterday but I left with 20 minutes to go. It was hard to watch a Cavan side getting that sort of a beating in Breffni Park. I think that it is time for the county board to take a look at the whole set up and see what can be done to improve things. Sad to say but walking into Breffni now, I almost enter with fear of what may happen rather than expectation. I know that this was a club game and without adding too much doom and gloom, I think that we are in for a difficult year in Division 2.

Any word on players coming or going from the panel?

1802027 I take it you werent around in the 80's or 90's benbulbenhead when you come up with a statement like that " those were the decades when the standards slipped and Cavan football went to the bottom of the heap " Cavan were playing Division one and two football regularly in the 80's and 90's losing a National League semi-final very narrowly to Dublin in 1989 with a superb display of football . If we had players of the calibre of Derek mc Donnell , Jim Reilly , John Brady , Michael Faulkner & Stephen King to name a few at our disposal nowadays we would be in a much better position . Far from being at " the bottom of the heap " we were competitive with the top teams in the country at the time without making the breakthrough in a very tough Ulster championship with no back door.
No doubt individually they were all good players and there were many more, but what did Cavan win back then? did I miss a few Ulster championship final or National league final wins?Is the ulster championship still not tough to win? Have Down,Donegal,Derry,Armagh & Tyrone not won All Ireland Titles since the 90's? I certainly don't remember any Ulster counties winning All Irelands in the 70's or 80's.Has football deteriorated so much in the last 20 years that a team, who played well in a National league semi final in 1989 would be competitive in todays game?Did Cavan not play in a Div 1 league final in 2002? Were Cavan competitive in Div 2 of the National league this year ? Yes, Are Cavan still losing first round games in the Ulster Championship? Yes . It's alright looking back with rose tinted glasses but the facts are Cavan were no better in the 70's or 80's than they are now, and those were definitely the decades when the Cavan slump began.

We played in Ulster finals 2 in the 70s 1 in 83 and 2 in the 90s . We can't get past the first round nowadays on the back of 4 winning u21 teams and a minor team. No rose tinted glasses needed. We had leaders back in the 70s 80s 90s both on and off the field. We were beaten by teams who went on to win all Ireland's down Derry Donegal. We played div 1 football . Where are our leaders nowadays ? On or off the field? All we have is a pro Hyland supporters gang on here living on u21 past glories. Take the blinkers off

in the 70's and 80ths you had Tyrone beaten in the 86 All Ireland and was it Armagh in 77 but in the 90ths onwards Ulster teams have done well.

in the 50's we played in 8 ulster finals winning 3 and an All Ireland, Armagh played in the 53 AI and Derry played in the 58 AI. In the 60's we played in 7 finals winning 4 and beat the previous AI winners in two of them, and lost to the eventual Ai winners in two others. Down won 3 All Irelands in the 60's.
To summarise in the 20 years 1950 to 1969 Cavan played 15 Ulster Finals winning 7 and an All Ireland, Ulster won 4 All Irelands and appeared in 2 others. In the 20 years 1970 to 1989 Cavan played in 3 Ulsters winning none, Ulster won no All Irelands but appeared in 2.
No matter what way you like to dress it up this shows that not only was Cavan football in decline during the 70's & 80's but also Ulster football.Fortunately Ulster football resurrected itself during the early 90's and 00's and for an all too brief period (95-02) Cavan football also.
Also U21 success does not naturally transfer to senior success just ask Galway 4 All Ireland wins since 2002,have they appeared in even an All Ireland semi final in that time? They haven't won a connacht title since 2008 and have actually only appeared in 2 since then.

I see in todays Celt that Givney is suppose to be back.major plus if he is but it says we have lost Flanagan & McKeever which is a huge loss.it forgot to mention all the rest of the players who have pulled out.lets hope keating will come back also.

McKeever an underrated player. He was unlucky not to feature more in the last couple of years. One of the few players capable of breaking a tackle.

There is a gang on here that gave actually managed quite a fear of revisionism - to declare the Cavan team of the 70s and 80s as being anything but poor. Yes they had some decent players, maybe some leaders. They also had a drink culture, were never near fit and were beaten over and over again by average ulster teams. If that's the standard we have to hit to be considered a success then I think Hyland should pack up now as his job is done .

Some positive news today about Givney and Hession. Wish Mark and Ronan the best. McKeever was a great servant to the cause from his teens while great to see Ronan battle back from serious illness to play again.
