The all Irelands were that long ago no one is even alive as a witness

Take a break from the Cavan forum for a day or two, Tom. Your obsession with us is getting tedious. We know our national titles are from a bygone era. Better old history than no history, all the same. In the last 30 years, we've won the same number of Ulster titles as your 'supposed' golden generation. You havent won a meaningful senior competition in over a decade. You've nothing to gloat about in past or present.

Funny that, I just watched the entire 1947 match vs Kerry only recently, a good friend of my Dad played in the match, Willy Doonan God Rest Him, but thank God I remember him very well and the wonderful stories that he told about the trip to New York! Now, is there anyone in Monaghan that can tell us about their All-Ireland Senior Football successes.....

A few interesting selections there. Are you Tom in disguise or have you just not being following Cavan recently?

I think that was last Summer you're talking about - Ray Galligan retired, Thomas Galligan isnt part of the panel, McEvoy & James Smith aren't playing inter-county this year and Luke Fortune wasnt called back in to the panel.

That's a hell of a team in fairness and a very strong bench but unfortunately I don't think alot of those names are on the panel for whatever reason. But I could be wrong, maybe some are training on their own and will be brought back in at some stage.

I suppose we'll know more after this weekend. Doughty in particular was one I was excited to see, I thought he'd be a shoe in to be on the panel after the club championship but I don't think he's involved. Casey is another one but I don't think he even made underage county teams which is surprising.

We are being completely written off by the bookies to beat Cork.

Fortune, Smith, McEvoy & the Galligan's arent on the panel, Doughty wasnt named either Cian Reilly & Barry Donnelly are injured.

In any case, huge improvements are needed as I believe pre-season didnt go well, beaten by Monaghan & Fermanagh in the McKenna Cup, I believe we lost a few challenge matches too including a defeat to Sligo and a hammering by Divison 3 side Down on a score line of 3-18 to 0-10 pts or thereabouts.

So people will need to be patient, its a 3 year project with a view to introducing new players to the panel and incorporating some of the u20 panel also - lessons to be learned here as Donegal have 7 u-20s training with the senior team, 3 of the actually started the McKenna Cup Final last week.

Wishing Cavan well for the season. Hoping Dermot and his team can bring good experience, and fresh hope and belief to the squad. Yes its going to a tough full of tough games in division 2, but this squad has plenty of experience, and with several expert media outlets backing Cavan for the drop again, this will surely give the team a reason to prove them wrong. Why always RTÉ? This team is full of passionate and proved players. Hoping the mix of old and new stand tall. An Cabhán Abú.

The problem is you are still living in this area and couple of wins over Monaghan in the Ulster champ. Monaghan have consistently reached the last 4 and 8 of the champ for the last 10-12 years.

The young lads are passionate, but is it about football

You're spot on there Tom - well apart from 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2024. Consistent hmmmm.

Consistently reached the last 8? Is that the standard you aspire to Tom? A decade without a meaningful title and a 'so called' golden generation coming to the end. You'll be down in div two again next year. After our result today, we'll be there waiting for you. I refuse to take seriously any team that relies on their goalie to get scores from play. There isn't a top level forward in the whole of Monaghan.

For a league game in January, that was about as sickening a defeat as it gets yesterday.

I thought we were the better team and had some brilliant individual performances. Lots of positives to take although it's hard to know where Cork will finish, they looked ordinary enough.

Some tired legs, poor turnovers, alot of harsh decisions and the influx of hurling supporters seemed to turn the game in Cork's favour.

Would have to generally agree. Thought we were on top at midfield. Lots of positives for sure (the Sun being one of them) Half forward line struggled and we are a bit light on the bench. Decisions seemed to go against us towards the end of the game but we got tired too. McVeety up front was a delight

It was and still is hard to stomach. Up there with some of the tough comeback losses Limerick 2002, Armagh 2004, Derry 2004, Meath 2007, Kildare 2008 are some that spring to mind. In fairness I can't think of many recently. Hopefully we will get a big crowd into Breffni on Sunday

Cork are a strange team, anyone can beat them in the league but then they go all out against Kerry in the Munster Championship, we should have left with the 2 points in the bag having been 7 points up at one stage but it wasnt to be. But all is not lost, some great positives to take from it, there was a great spirit and a great attitude and this attitude & spirit needs to be taken into the Meath game on Sunday, its a home game, a local derby, Meath are a very good team and will be hard to break down but home advantage and the good performance against Cork can be a huge plus for Cavan, we need the 2 points as we don't want to be travelling to Tyrone next week with 0 points from 2 games, but you'd be surprised what a win could do for us on Sunday.

Meath next. They are very much being talked up in the media this week. I wonder if they will live up to the hype. For all their youth and athleticism, I'm not sure how many top players they have. Costello is probably their best player and the Caulfield wing back looks solid, but I would still take Paddy Lynch, McVeety, Niall Carolan over any of them every day of the week

Meath are an excellent team, still very young but learning, reached an All-Ireland semi-final last year and will be looking to push on, Costello, Jordan Morris, Jack Flynn in midfield (kicked 7 points las week against Derry), James Conlon, Caulfied, Menton, Frayne, they have good footballers all over the field and will be up for it after an impressive win last week, but home advantage might just shade it for Cavan if we play the we played against Cork last week, but it has to be for the full 70 mins. Kickouts are going to be huge, in the first half last week, Cork won 11 from 14 of their own kickouts in the first half, Cavan retained 9 from 13 (19 from 29 overall) whilst Corks overall was 23 from 27 kickouts so improvement needed. The other thing is that when Cavan started to get tired, Cork started to pressure us and we started to make a few little mistakes so this is something we need to improve on also.

Plenty of good fight on display today from Cavan.

Honestly I felt like Meath were wasteful and left a lot of the pitch, and Cavan were the inverse - really clinical, and the ref blew Meath off the pitch at times, but it was always going to be a fiery derby so comes with the territory.

Any real Meath supporter will take a lot from winning today in Breffni, we simply dont win there, and it will mean a lot to us.

Awful shame Cavan have lost narrowly now in two successive games but if they play to that level for the rest of the league, they'll pick up 2/3 wins. All the best with the rest of the campaign.
