Replying To HonCavan:  "Hopefully David Brady gets a run against Antrim, he deserves it after getting injured 30 seconds into the first game of the season. Have to agree about Galligan's performance, I'm always nervous about him though as last year he had poor games for kickouts and they cost us so hopefully that's an area he has improved upon. Would love to see a much more attacking team and gameplan against Antrim as they're the weakest team in our section as Offaly showed last night that by playing attacking football or "The Kerry Way" as their manager put it, is the only way we'll have a chance at Tyrone in the final game of our section. The Dr McKenna cup may not be important silverware wise, but if we get to semi final, it would be great as we would have played Tyrone and another section winner, maybe Donegal and would give the lads a good game to be more match fit before the league starts."
I dont think Galligans kick outs per say were the problem last year. I think it was the movement out the field to create space for him. Galligan has shown he can hit a ridiculously accurate kick out onto the opposition 45. The shame of it was in Hylands last year we had a really good kick out strategy. Definitely something that Mattie needs to get right this year.

Sean O Rinn .... you seem very critical that the Gaels lads are not involved at this early stage.
Just for the record these Gaels lads have been involved in training and competitive games right up to the end of November.
Now it the interest of fairness I think they are well entitled to a break for at least 2 months, the same break as every other player has got.
Freshness is very important .
It's not so long ago posters were saying lads like Johnston was past it.
Well now it the chance for all those so called potential inter county forwards to stake their claim for a place.

Sure Johnson is on the wrong side of it, that's why he was on the bench quite a bit in the business end of last season as clearly Mattie didnt think he was up to a full 70 mins. I assume the new lads like Connolly and Caoimhin Reilly are with colleges and that's why they are not on the panel. Its the other Gaels lads I would like to see, good lads like two Murrays and Moloney Derham for example. Niall McKiernan put his hand up anyway.

Is joe dillion on the panel? It's great to see ado cole and Conor Bradley on panel and with Niall mckiernan and dara mcaveety and Mackey and Conor madden and caoimhin reilly and Martin reilly , forwards shouldn't be a problem, midfield would be more of a problem, we definitely need fergal reilly back in for cornerback taught he got a row deal last year.

A blow for Cavan as young promising midfielder suspected to have broke his cheek bone wednesday night will leave him out for most the league or playing catch up on others from now on...

Any other thoughts from wednesday night as we look into the league?

Lots of young talented players but i feel maybe a squad is too young this year to expect anything off lets just enjoy the year and see where it brings us..
A day in clones and a qualifier run and you'd have to be happy this year with the players that have left themselves out

I agree but these lads you mentioned are entitled to a break.
There still a place for Johnston and Lyng as impact subs as their on pitch footballing brain far outweighs any forward we have coming through.
It's all about getting a balance of old and new. Experience and inexperience.
That's was the problem back in 2011/12 when we went for inexperienced u21s and discarded the experienced regulars like Johnston, Lyng , Gerry Sheridan

Freshness for what the championship or the national league. Right now fella the national league is more important than anything else and if these lads are not training how can you expect them to perform. I am not critical at all I am more worried about our league performances starting the end of this month not the McKenna cup or the championship at this stage. If there are Gaels lads coming in they should be in now even if only getting to know the new lads and to understand each other along with keeping them self's match fit.
It's a complete different situation this year and we need every one available in getting involved. It's that simple I am sorry to say. If they are unfit different situation for they would be of no value to the county.
I dislike the McKenna cup but match practice/fitness is very important would you not agree because of the early start of the league this year.
Regarding S. Johnston the County management used him as an impact sub where as the gaels used him as a full match player shows you the difference in the levels required at Inter county level and Club level???? He is alway's good for a few points so he has to be welcome in the county set up also Mackey Corr just to name a few.
We have an away match to Clare a match we have to win.

Gerry Sheridan? Think he may be a bit old.

I did read it, very closely. Gerry Sheridan was not discarded in 2011. He retired in maybe 1999? Maybe you are thinking of Dermot Sheridan who is a different player altogether.

I was thinking it was Dermot as well but sadly he was suffering with a lot of injury issues.

Replying To HonCavan:  "Positives from game-
Great defence as always, on numerous times managed to swallow up St. Mary's forwards and get turnovers.
Conor Madden and Niall McKiernan played brilliantly in the forwards. Cole and Magee had good moments but didn't have as big as a sway as the other 2.
Flanagan played brilliantly as a sweeper and came away with loose balls in the backs a few times, but when he was marking Burns from St Marys his weak defending was shown.
Oisin Keirnan and Ciaran Brady played well in half backs and full back line was solid, if not spectacular too.
Subs Thomas Galligan, Darragh Kennedy and Conor Brady played well off bench.
Kickouts and stopping their short kickouts was very good with Cavan winning most kickouts and a few of theirs in second half.

Improvements to be made-
Should have brought Moynagh and Daly in earlier to see how they would play rather than a cameo at the end.
St.Mary's missed a few 45's and a few frees at the end which culd have drawn the game or won it for them.
Half the squad from last year in the stand for the game, Mackey, McVeety, Clarke and McKeirnan were watching but not in squad, need these players back and would rather them back sooner than later to be match fit for the league along with convincincing Tomas Corr and Fergal Reilly to re join the panel as they were great last season, especially Reilly who should have been starting the games at end of championship and wasn't.
Cavan played better going forward than i have seen in a few years but there were moments when the game slowed and they returned to the slump of passing across the field and backwards, one such time leading to a loose ball which no one but the St Marys full forward chased and they got a free from.
Goal mouth scramble at the end went out for 45, very lucky not to have conceded a goal at that stage."
Good report there - Cheers for that!

Hopefully Mattie will try out more players tomorrow. I know a lot of contributors on the site are looking for a quick return of many of the old guard but there has got to be an acceptance that we need to unearth new talent if we are to make a break through during the summer.

We all have different takes on things but given the choice of playing in Division 1 next year or playing in the Super Eights this summer i would have no hesitation in choosing the latter target.

It's surviving in division two that has to be a priority first and foremost.
We don't have the luxury of testing 2/3rds of our team with new players knowing most will not be starting in the first 15 come the end of this month. Tomorrow I hope will give us an idea where we are going when he names the panel for the Antrim game. Tyrone did the business on them so do we expect to do the same.????
Well this is the starting 15
Galligan
McLoughlin
Monaghan
Philips
Kennedy
Brady
Wharton
McCormack
Brady
Clerkin
Wharton
Kiernan
McKiernan
Cole Magee

Well not many teams in Ulster or the country are I would not be overly worried because we will not be meeting them in Division 2. Today and then the difference from today's match and next Wednesday's match will for sure tell us a lot as to what direction we are going. I hope you are wrong regarding division 3 hence my reason for fuming in one of my previous posts regarding experimenting with too many new players but please god I only hope that the manager is happy with what he is doing and knows that they will hit the ground running with a strong team for the national league starting at the end of the month. .

Lads keep the head....that was a Cavan B team today....manager has to try out new players....traditionally Cavan seem to have fielded pretty strong selections in McKenna & you just don't learn from that...so never mind the defeat today......rather any new names showing promise !
