Derek Lyng has stepped down as Kilkenny senior hurling manager in the wake of the Cats' early championship exit.

Kilkenny failed to qualify from the Leinster SHC round-robin series for the first time since its introduction, with a first championship defeat to Dublin since 2013 sealing their fate.

The Emeralds clubman spent four seasons at the helm after taking over from Brian Cody at the end of 2022. He guided the Cats to three successive Leinster SHC titles as well as to an All-Ireland SHC final appearance against Limerick in 2023 and two Allianz League finals.

In a glittering playing career, Lyng won six All-Ireland SHC medals, 10 Leinster titles, five Allianz Leagues and two All-Stars. In addition, Kilkenny claimed two All-Irelands, three Leinsters and two Allianz Leagues during his five years as a selector under Cody.

Kilkenny GAA chairperson PJ Kenny said: “Derek’s contribution to Kilkenny hurling over almost three decades has been immense.

“His commitment to the county has never been in question, and he has always carried out his role with honesty, integrity and pride.

“On behalf of Kilkenny County Board and the people of Kilkenny, I would like to sincerely thank Derek for his outstanding service as a player, selector and manager.

“We are deeply grateful for everything he has done for Kilkenny hurling and wish him and his family every success in the future.”
