The Downs bridged a 17-year gap when they dethroned champions St Loman's in a tightly fought Westmeath SFC final at TEG Cusack Park.

An unbeaten season was capped off brilliantly by Lar Wall's side as they captured their long-awaited tenth Flanagan Cup title on a 1-8 to 0-7 scoreline today. Man-of-the-match Niall Mitchell bagged the decisive goal midway through the opening half.

It had been a cagey start to proceedings, but with 15 minutes gone, The Downs broke the deadlock with county hurler Mitchell breaching the holders rearguard to slide the ball low into the bottom right corner of Jason Daly's net. The Blues eventually got on the scoreboard via Ryan Jones and Ronan O'Toole brought them level on the stroke of half-time, 1-1 to 0-4.

Another O'Toole point pushed St Loman's into the lead for the first time on the resumption. However, the resiliant black and ambers weren't to be denied, adding a championship crown to the league title they won earlier this season.
