Walsh Cup: Higgins goal lifts students

January 21, 2012
NUIG recorded a deserved win over Wexford by 1-11 to 0-13 at Bellefield on Saturday evening.

The students were impressive following a shaky start that saw Wexford go into a 0-8 to 0-2 lead by the 25th minute with Ian Byrne, John Leacy, Tomas O'Leary and Jim Berry all finding the range for the experimental home side.

Niall Burke hit NUIG's early points, but they finished the half strongly when Daithi Burke, Niall Burke and John Paul O'Connell all pointed, while in between Dean Higgins scored the only goal of the game to leave it 0-9 to 1-5 at the break.

Daniel Martin Carroll pointed for Wexford on the restart, but NUIG took control of the game hereafter and another point free from Niall Burke was followed with a score by Cormac Diviney to level matters after 42 minutes.

Eoin Hayes, Niall and Daithi Burke added point to open a three point gap before dual star Lee Chin and Gary Moore pointed to leave a point between the sides.

Niall Burke then pointed his fifth free of the evening and although Michael O'Hanlon responded for Wexford, it is the students that go through.
