Leinster Colleges SFC 'A': Wins for Edenderry and Athy

January 31, 2010
Holders St. Mary's, Edenderry are through to the semi-finals of the Leinster Colleges SFC 'A' following a hard-earned 1-11 to 1-8 victory over Dublin's St. Benildus.

The visitors to Ballyfore got off to a flying start when Colm Egan scored an excellent goal. But the Offaly students, who were narrowly beaten by Jack O'Connor's Colaiste na Sceilge in last year's Hogan Cup decider, roared back to lead by 1-9 to 1-3 at the break.

The Dublin side battled hard in the second half, but Edenderry did just enough to stay on course for back-to-back provincial successes.

Ardscoil na Trionoide of Athy held St. Peter's, Wexford scoreless in the second half as they racked up an impressive 1-11 to 0-5 victory in Athy. The sides were level at the break, but three pointed frees from Liam McGovern after the restart sent the home team on their way.

And Niall Kelly's goal five minutes from time sealed the Kildare school's place in the last-four.

Meanwhile, Cork's long reign as All-Ireland Vocational Schools hurling champions was ended in Thomastown yesterday when they succumbed to Kilkenny by 3-8 to 1-8.

Chasing their sixth All-Ireland title on the trot, the Rebels struggled throughout this quarter-final clash and their fate was sealed when Conor Tobin slotted over his fourth successful free in stoppage-time.
