January 25, 2010
Wexford earned a home semi-final tie with Westmeath in the O'Byrne Cup Shield next weekend after a dramatic victory over Longford at Enniscorthy yesterday. A punched goal from substitute Adrian Flynn seven minutes into stoppage-time gave the home side a 1-10 to 0-12 victory. Longford led by 0-3 to 0-2 after 15 minutes, but a Ben Brosnan penalty - which was awarded for a foul on Redmond Barry - gave Jason Ryan's charges a 1-4 to 0-6 interval lead. Longford responded with four unanswered points per Brian Kavanagh (0-3) and Jamesie Martin to lead by 0-10 to 1-5 after 51 minutes. They continued to lead until deep into injury-time when Flynn struck for his dramatic winner. DIT will meet Carlow in the other semi-final their respective wins over UCD and Wicklow on Friday and Saturday. Goals from the Tyrrellspass pair Denis Glennon and Gavin Hoey, meanwhile, helped Westmeath to a facile 2-17 to 0-6 victory over Kilkenny in Ballyragget.
