It was business as usual for St. Munnas in 2004 as they completed a hat-trick of senior camogie championship successes at the expense of Lough Lene Gaels, while Raharney achieved a noteworthy double by claiming the junior and senior B titles.Mighty St. Munnas reaffirmed their dominance of the Westmeath camogie scene when powering to a 2-14 to 1-4 victory over Lough Lene Gaels in the senior championship final at Cusack Park on August 8 last.It was the Turin-based clubs third senior championship success in-a-row and their 16th in 17 years. Their only defeat in that time was to the Gaels in the 2001 decider when they were bidding for their 14th on the trot.Six teams competed in last years championship with St. Munnas taking a 100 per cent record into the knock-out stages. In the semi-finals, the champions recorded a 2-10 to 2-2 victory over Delvin, while Lough Lene Gaels had eight points to spare, 1-10 to 1-2, over Raharney.Having just edged out Lough Lene Gaels in the league stages, St. Munnas could afford to take nothing for granted when the sides renewed their rivalry in the final. But after a keenly-contested first half, the red and whites gradually gained a stranglehold on the game and put the result beyond doubt when scoring two goals in the closing stages. The Gaels led early on thanks to points from Joanne Walsh and Gemma Egan. But St. Munnas responded in impressive fashion with unanswered points from Annette Heffernan, Dinah Loughlin and Rhona Murtagh pushing them into a 0-5 to 0-2 lead. After Heffernan was unlucky to see her shot rebound from the crossbar, she slotted over a free to put four points between the teams. But just when it seemed the Gaels were losing their way, Mary Henry blasted a free to the net to leave the minimum in it, 0-6 to 1-2, at half-time.Following the restart, Heffernan and Sheila Carroll traded points. However, it was all St. Munnas thereafter with a flurry of points from Michelle Scanlon, Loughlin and Murtagh propelling them into a 0-13 to 1-3 lead.Janette McCormack briefly stopped the rot for the Gaels when notching their fourth point, but St. Munnas kept going to the end and sealed an emphatic victory with late goals from Heffernan and Marie Hussey.Afterwards, St. Munnas captain Mary Glynn accepted the cup from PJ Fulham, chairman of the Westmeath camogie board. And it was a case of double celebration for Richie Heffernans charges when Lorraine Leavy earned the Player of the Match award. In the junior decider, beaten senior semi-finalists Raharney recorded a facile 6-12 to 0-0 victory over a youthful Castletown-Geoghegan to claim their first title since 1992. As the scoreline suggests, it was a real baptism of fire for the black and ambers who were appearing in their first final.Castletown played with great spirit throughout the match but their inexperience was a telling factor. Raharney always held the edge and the outcome was never in doubt. The Deelsiders were quickly into their stride with Olive and Sarah Weir notching early points. Castletown goalkeeper Niamh Kirby then produced two great saves in quick succession from Grainne Lynch before the same player registered Raharneys third point.Further points from Olive Weir and Martina Calleary extended Raharneys lead before Gemma Briody and Olive Weir both found the net to leave the blue and whites in a commanding position. Sarah Weir added two points before Olive Weir swooped for another goal to give Raharney a 3-7 to 0-0 lead at the break. There was no respite for Castletown-Geoghegan after the break with a Sarah Weir point being followed by a third goal from Olive Weir. In the final quarter, Sarah and Olive Weir added two more goals to complete the rout. There was further joy for Raharney in early November when they saw off the challenge of Delvin to claim the senior B championship title. Raharneys 2-7 to 0-4 victory was a turn up for the books as in two previous meetings earlier in the season, Delvin had emerging as convincing winners. The sides were level on 0-2 each at the end of the first quarter, but Declan Mullens Raharney side finished the half strongly with a goal from midfielder Sarah Weir helping them to a 1-3 to 0-2 lead at the break.Early in the second half, Weir notched her second goal and, despite the best efforts of Karen Clune who accounted for all of Delvins scores, Raharney ran out comfortable winners by 2-7 to 0-4.The minor title went to Crookedwood who defeated Lough Lene Gaels by 2-1 to 0-2 at Loughegar on September 4. In a game dominated by defences, the Gaels took the lead when Niamh Carty pointed after nine minutes. But the final only came to life in the closing stages of the first half when goals from Donna Dennigan and Catherine Murray, and a Lauren McNicholas point, gave Crookedwood a 2-1 to 0-1 lead at the interval. After the break, Lough Lene Gaels tried hard to make up the deficit but all that they could muster was a solitary point from Siobhan Murphy as the Wood comfortably held on for their first minor success since 1990.The Feile na nGael winners were Lough Lene Gaels who defeated Delvin by 6-2 to 1-2.
