McCormack the goal hero

September 08, 2003
Castlepollard 1-10 Clonkill 1-9 A dramatic last gasp goal by Darren McCormack fired Castlepollard to their first Westmeath senior hurling title since 1997, with a one-point victory over Clonkill at Cusack Park on Sunday, September 7. The goal came three minutes into injury-time, just as it looked like Clonkill were on their way to victory in the 2003 Cassidy's Hotel SHC final. However, in wintry conditions at Mullingar, county star McCormack pounced to see Castlepollard win the title in their centenary year. The turning point of the game was the sending-off of Clonkill captain Sean Loughlin midway through the second-half as they led by four points. Loughlin was sent off for a questionable second yellow card, and Castlepollard capitalised on his absence. Clonkill had looked in control at the break, with Andrew Mitchell's goal giving them a 1-6 to 0-6 lead. However, they only scored three points in the second-half, and Castlepollard finished strongly to grab a dramatic victory.
