Kilbeggan Shamrocks GAA Notes
May 20, 2012
Big day for Scoil an Chlochair
All roads lead to Cusack Park on Friday evening when Scoil an Chlochair will do battle with Gainstown National School for the Cumann na mBunscol title.
The final takes place at 5.30pm and the excitement has been building this week ahead of what will be the first appearance by a Kilbeggan school in the final since 1969. On that occasion, Kilbeggan Boys' National School lost out to a Ballynacargy National School team that was captained by Longford/Westmeath TD Willie Penrose and managed by former GAA director-general Liam Mulvihill, who was principal in Ballynacargy at the time.
Kilbeggan's last Cumann na mBunscol success was in 1961, when they completed back-to-back title wins. They were also champions in 1955.
Scoil an Chlochair scored a thrilling extra-time victory over The Downs National School in the semi-final a few weeks ago and we wish the players and their mentors Padraig Seery and Charlie Moore the very best of luck in their bid to bring a first Cumann na mBunscol title back to Kilbeggan in over 50 years.
Division 3 defeat to Ballynacargy
Our junior team's recent poor run of form continued when they were comprehensively beaten by Ballynacargy in Division 3 of the All-County League in Ballynacargy last Tuesday night.
John Brennan's early goal proved to be a false dawn as we crashed to 1-4 to 2-12 defeat. A big improvement will be needed if we are to avoid any slip-ups against Loughnavalley in our second outing of the JFC at Castletown-Geoghegan this Saturday.
Team: Shane Keenan; Shaun Pidgeon, Fergal Scally, David Conroy; Kevin Smith, David Keenan, Paul Maloney; James Brennan, Jason O'Neill; Simon O'Neill, John Brennan, Mel Kiernan; Mattie McCormack, Emmet Dalton, David Marshall. Subs: Ken Scally and Paul Lewis.
All-weather pitch
Our new all-weather facilities, which are suitable for five-a-side and eight/nine-a-side games, are now available to rent. For bookings, telephone Ger Carton on 086-8980798.
County teams
Heartiest congratulations to the Fennell twins, David and Paul, who were part of the Westmeath team that pulled off a famous Leinster SHC victory over Antrim on Saturday, and to Fiona Claffey who helped the Westmeath ladies to a National League Division 3 title at Leitrim's expense.
Well done also Alan McCormack, who is team coordinator with the Westmeath minors who overcame Wicklow in their Leinster quarter-final, and commiserations to Philip Kiernan, who is a selector with the Westmeath senior team that suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the Leinster SFC in Navan on Sunday.
