U-14 HURLING DEVELOPMENT:
Our U14 hurling development squad hosted Clare in Moate on Saturday Aug 14th.
This was a good test for the squad & the match was played over 3 periods of 30 minutes each.
Clare started well & led 1-5 to 0-0 after 10 minutes but Westmeath showed great composure to get back into the game with scores from Shane Clavin, Sean Lee & Dara Clinton.
With Conor Shaw & Ronan Wallace strong at the back, Westmeath were one point down at the end of the first 30 minutes - Clare 1-7 Wesmeath 1-6.
The second period was a ding dong affair & was played with a keen intensity. Alan Kincaid, Conor O Brien, Darren Giles, Johnny Bermingham & Micheal Daly were all to the fore & Westmeath were ahead after an hour Westmeath 3-12 Clare 3-10.
The third period saw the introduction of the full squad & with several changes being made by both sides, the game lost a bit of it's bite & Clare won out in the end on a scoreline of Clare 6-15 Westmeath 4-13. Brian O Reilly, Stephen O Farrell, Conor Mullally, Dan Glennon, Stephen Fagan, Andrew Corbett & Eoin Carolan were prominent in this period.
PILOT PROJECT FOR THE GAA SOCIAL INITIATIVE:
Introduction.  This is an invitation to all clubs who may wish to participate in the Pilot Project for the 'GAA Social Initiative'.  The project will be launched in the  October/November period.  The Pilot Project will be limited to a maximum of two per county so clubs interested in participating are urged to apply immediately. The deadline for submission of applications is:
15 September 2010
Background.  The GAA Social Initiative arose as a result of President Mary McAleese and her husband, Martin, noticing an absence of older men in attendance at official functions during their many visits to local communities over the years.  They established a Forum in 2007 consisting of selected older men - leading academics, health and social care professionals, service providers and local and national representatives - to explore the reasons why some older men are, for various reasons, no longer participating in local community life.  Subsequently, she invited the GAA to implement some of these ideas.
GAA Social Initiative.  Arising from the above, The 'GAA Social Initiative' is being launched as a community-based, island-wide project utilising the GAA club network as a vehicle to engage older men who are not currently participating in local community life.
Pilot Project.  A Pilot Project is being conducted as a first step in the implementation of the Initiative.  This will involve approx 50 clubs being selected to lead the way in organising social activities and events for older men in their areas. Although, inevitably, many of these events will be GAA-oriented, the Initiative is not meant to be exclusive to GAA members and all older men within our club areas should be made welcome.
Club Organisation of the Initiative.  The initial challenge for participating clubs will be to select volunteers to conduct these activities.  It is hoped that the Initiative will be seen as worthy of support and will inspire suitable club members to get involved.  The second challenge for the clubs will be to identify potential participants in their club areas and approach them in a way that will motivate them to attend the organised events.
Training.   All club volunteers will attend a training/briefing day in Croke Park before the project begins.
Incentives.   All clubs who participate in the Pilot Project will be presented with an award to reflect their status and effort as Pilot Project Clubs.  In addition, one participating club deemed to have achieved the highest standard of excellence in the delivery of the project will be presented with a President's Award by Uachtarán, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Criostóir Ó Cuana.
Conclusion.   It is fully appreciated how much work is already being done at club level.  However, this Initiative, having been launched by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, has a special status.  It is a signal honour for the GAA that she has chosen the organisation to implement the Initiative on her behalf.  As a result, there is an onus on us to respond wholeheartedly by accepting the responsibility attached to that honour.  It also provides an opportunity for the GAA to once again show its great heart by utilising the vast network of outstanding community volunteers that we are fortunate to have in our ranks.  Finally, I believe it is a vote of confidence in the GAA that President Mary McAleese has selected us to lead her Initiative and I urge you to respond to the challenge.  Any club wishing to take part can  discuss the Initiative directly with Sean Kilbribe and he can be contacted at 01 8658617 or 087 9835810.
