St Marys Notes

August 23, 2010
Minor Championship
St Marys made their debut in the championship on Thursday 19th August against Garrycastle in Rochfortbridge. A wet evening left underfoot conditions greasy, and,  combined with the previous days Leaving Cert celebrations, a poor game resulted.  In a very low-scoring game, points from Eddie Alford(2) and Ian Hyland(1) left St Marys leading by a point with half-time approaching. Then up popped an unmarkrd Aaron Byrne to drill the ball home for a crucial goal on the stroke of half-time.
The same player again got free early in the second half to goal again and in effect , with scores as rare as hens' teeth, kill off the game. Further points from Alford(3) and Byrne(1) completed the scoring for St Marys, and even a goal from Garrycastle had little effect on the outcome. So a winning start from St Marys despite a lack-lustre performance. There will be sterner challenges ahead and a considerable improvement wil be needed in future.
Final Score; St Marys 2-07, Garrycastle 1-04.
Team; Deven Whitstun, Brian O'Sullivan, Lee Wallace, Daniel Plant, Conor Duigenan, Cathal Coyle, Joe Guiden, Declan Lennon, Ray O'Sullivan, Kienan Gill, Eddie Alford(0-5), Aaron Byrne(2-1), Ian Hyland(0-1),Matthew Cunningham, Niall Cully, Liam McCarthy, Lenny Gavin L:iam Metcalfe, Dean Darcy.
U16 Championship St Marys travelled to Caulry to play the first round of the Championship. Severely depleted, St Marys faced a mammoth task against one of the strongest teams in the competition. The re-jigged St Marys team put up a commendable performance, but were always chasing a lost cause with so many absentees. However this was their first defeat of the year and this team is well capable of bouncing back from this setback.
Final Score St Marys 2-09, Caulry 5-12.
