St Marys G.A.A. Notes 07/03/2010
Feile
The U14s had a busy week, turning out twice in the Feile. First up was a trip to Tubberclair on Wednesday 03/03/2010. This game was played under lights and this proved to be a novel experience for the St Marys players. St Marys were first into their stride with Hugh Lyster registering a point. Despite a lot of possession for St Marys, it was Tubberclair who got the next two points from frees conceded needlessly. At this point St Marys got their act together and started to clock up the scores with Eoin O'Malley notching 2-02 and Jack Reid and Josh Byrne getting a point apiece, to leave St Marys well in control at the break.
Half time score: St Marys 2-05, Tubberclair 0-02.
The second half began in great style for St Marys with Cathal Moran picking up a breaking ball and crashing the ball to the net. Tubberclair fought gamely and scored 4 of the next 5 points, Adam Kavanagh being the sole point scorer for St Marys at this stage. Then that man O'Malley pounced once more to claim his hat-trick, followed by another major from Liam Metcalfe. Hugh Lyster finished the scoring for St Marys with a point. Tubberclair finished strongly and a point was followed by a well deserved goal before proceedings were brought to a close.
There were strong performances all over the field for St Marys with a big desire for hard work evident.
This was a good start to the season for this St Marys team. A lot of chances were created and the finishing at times was good, but a lot of chances went abegging, and in future games this could be costly. Overall though a satisfactory performance and a good result .A big thanks to Tubberclair for hosting us on the night and for a clean ,sporting game.
Final score: St Marys 5-07, Tubberclair 1-07.
Team and scorers; Matthew Bradley, Ryan Delaney, Colm Beglin, Fionn Daly, Say Nxumalo, Brandon Darcy, Ryan Gavin, Adam Kavanagh(0-1), Jack Reid(0-1), Sam Plant, Peter Lawlor, Hugh Lyster(0-2), Cathal Moran(1-0), Eoin O'Malley(3-2), Josh Byrne(0-1), Liam Metcalfe(1-0), Lee Carpenter, Andrew Bollard, Sean Lyster, Anthony Brady, Jude Keegan, Sean Downey, Sean Morgan, Cian Gahan.
Next up was a trip to Kilbeggan to play Kilbeggan/St Josephs in the second round of the Feile on Saturday 06/03/2010. Conditions were perfect for football and the two teams settled down to give us a great afternoon's entertainment. St Marys were first off the mark with a point from Eoin O'Malley. Kilbeggan then had a short period of dominance which yielded a goal and a point. This seemed to annoy St Marys who then went on a scoring spree and knocked over 1-6 before Kilbeggan got back on the scoreboard with a point St Marys then finished off the half with 3 more points to Kilbeggan's one to leave St Marys with a respectable half-time lead.
Half-time score: St Marys 1-10, Kilbeggan/St. Josephs1-03.
The second half started off brightly for St Marys as they dominated in all areas and added 2-03 early on to put themselves into a seemingly unassailable position. Then the wheels fell off as complacency set in and Kilbeggan started a revival which rocked St Marys. They whittled away St Marys lead and got the margin down to 2 points with about a minute to go. One last counter attack from St Marys yielded a point from Jack Reid and almost immediately the final whistle sounded much to the relief of the St Marys players and especially their mentors.
This was again a good performance from St Marys and but for the lapse in concentration in the final quarter this would have been a comfortable win. However a repeat of this would have a disastrous outcome in future games. Nonetheless there were many outstanding performances from St Marys players such as Fionn Daly, Brandon Darcy, Ryan Gavin, Cathal Moran, but surely Jack Reid gave his best ever performance in a green shirt. This team now goes on to play local rivals Tyrrellspass in Rochfortbridge next Saturday and this is set to be a keenly contested fixture
Final score: St Marys 3-14, Kilbeggan/St Josephs 4-08.
Team and scorers; Matthew Bradley, Ryan Delaney, Brandon Darcy, Fionn Daly, Say Nxumalo, Peter Lawlor, Ryan Gavin, Adam Kavanagh, Jack Reid(1-7), Sam Plant(0-1), Aaron Henry, Hugh Lyster(0-1), Cathal Moran,(0-3) Eoin O'Malley(2-1), Josh Byrne, Liam Metcalfe(0-1), Lee Carpenter, Andrew Bollard, Sean Lyster, Sean Duigenan, Jude Keegan, Sean Downey, Sean Morgan, Cian Gahan, Eoin Fallon.
