St Marys Notes

A.C.F.L. Division 3
St Mary's played their second game of the Division 3 league against local rivals, Tyrellspass on Sunday last at half three in Rochfortbridge. The players were confident going into the game that they would maintain their 100% start to the year and so it turned out to be the case.
The first three minutes saw both sides trade points before a terrific Colin Gavin pass resulted in Alan Gavin being fouled inside the small rectangle when a goal seemed certain. Up stepped Eoin Gorman to coolly place the ball in the corner.
St Mary's began to dominate and both Robbie Kenny and Alan Gavin missed great goal chances with the latter rocking the bar. However moments later Larry Poynton showed his class when he scored the second goal of the game which was sweetly struck along the ground into net.
It seemed that the players were too focused on racking up a large score as three more times they went for goals in the first half when a point seemed a better option. Twice the players saw the ball roll agonisingly across an open goalmouth. However St Mary's still led by 2-04 to 0-2 points at half time with Gorman and Poynton adding the points.
In the second half St Mary's seemed to take their foot of the pedal knowing the game was won, but Gorman and Poynton kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely with a point each. St Mary's were never really tested and further points from Gorman, Kenny and Ger Keegan saw them run out emphatic victors against disappointing opposition.
Damien Gavin was sent off with five minutes remaining after an off the ball incident when he received a second yellow card. It had little bearing on the final score which was St Mary's 2-09-Tyrellspass 0-5.

Minor League
St Marys minors made their debut in this years league with a home fixture against Moate on Sunday morning 28/02/2010. A bitterly cold morning greeted the players and it wasn't a pleasant way to begin the season. Nevertheless the two teams endeavoured to play good football. First into their stride was Moate who proceeded to play fast open football and this caused many problems for a rusty St Marys. Two early points were followed by a penalty award to Moate which Deven Whitstun coolly saved and in so doing kept St Marys in the match. St Marys then opened their account with a point from Dermot Judge. Moate knocked over another point before Matthew Cunningham notched a white flag for the 'Bridge. The same player was then fouled in the square and was awarded a penalty which he expertly converted. This gave St Marys a lead they scarcely deserved. Moate scored two more points to St Marys one to leave the home side up by a point at half-time.
Half-time score; St Marys 1-03, Moate 0-5.
Moate started the second half with the first point. St Marys then established a two point lead with points from Dermot Judge and Ian Hyland. Moate brought the margin back to one point before Cathal Coyle notched an inspirational point for St Marys. Again Moate replied only for Eddie Alford to again put two points between the sides after some great interplay. With 10 minutes to go it looked as if St Marys would prevail but Moate would not give in and managed to tie up the game with two further points. The last few minutes were nervy as both teams tried to win it and both teams were relieved when Sean Sheridan sounded the final whistle. In fairness to Moate they did not deserve to lose and St Marys hardly did enough to earn a win so a draw was probably the best result for both teams.
St Marys have much room for improvement but shouldn't be too unhappy with the result. There is a lot of football in this side and I'm sure this will become apparent in the coming months.
Final score; St Marys 1-07, Moate 0-10.
