Westmeath G A A Notes By Pat Reilly Westmeath P R O.
LEINSTER U-21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP:
Westmeath started off their campaign in this competition with a convincing win over Kildare last Saturday in Mullingar. Westmeath fielded a strong team which had a number of senior panellists in its midst, Westmeath started the better of the two sides and after twelve minutes had a three point lead. The forwards were trying hard but the shooting wasn't that accurate, until just before half time when James Durkan collected a fine pass from Ian Coffey to score the games only goal and leave Westmeath with a five point lead at the break 1-05 to 0-03.
The start of the second half saw a Kildare resurgence and as the half wore on and with Westmeath having only managed a single point in this period a draw looked on the cards, when Kildare rattled the Westmeath crossbar in the final minute the small but appreciative Westmeath crowd could hardly wait for the final whistle. Westmeath hung on and won on a final score of 1-06 to 0-06 and now face Meath in the next round at home.
NATIONAL HURLING LEAGUE:
Westmeath Hurlers played Wexford in their first fixture in this years national League last Sunday in Cusack Park. This was a good lively game of hurling and the final score does not at all reflect the match as Westmeath were well in contention for three quarters of the match and but for a number of sloppy passes and unforced errors this game could have had a different outcome.
The game flowed from end to end in the first half with fine scores from both sets of forwards and with fifteen minutes in the game gone the sides were level, it wasn't until the twentieth minute that Wexford took the lead a lead which the never relinquished. The introduction of a number of subs to the side brought an extra spark but Westmeath were guilty of some simple mistakes in defence and these cost them dearly as the sharp shooting Diarmud Lyng duly punished them, and when Wexford Sub Jim Berry netted after 23 minutes of the second half the game began to slip away from Westmeath with Wexford running out winners on a final scoreline of 1-20 to 0-14.
NATIONAL HURLING LEAGUE:
Westmeath Hurlers travel to Carlow next weekend for the second round of this years league, where both sides will be looking for their first league points, Westmeath while having been beaten last weekend by Wexford, will be going out with all guns blazing with the hope of gaining revenge for last year's defeat in the league. Carlow on the other hand will be really up for the match despite suffering defeat last weekend to Antrim, while there is never much between the sides one can look forward to a close hard battle and I feel Westmeath should claim two further league points from this fixture
SCÓR NA nÓg FINALS:
The All Ireland Finals of Scór na nÓg took place last Saturday in Athlone, and congratulations must go to Moate All Whites and The Downs GAA clubs on winning All Ireland titles in The ballad Group and Set Dancing competitions respectively. This is a wonderful achievement for both clubs and shows that there is more to the GAA than just competing on the field. Well done to all Westmeath clubs who continue to take part in Scór na nÓg and congratulations to you all, you are doing your families, clubs and county proud.

REMINDER FOR ALL CLUBS:
I would ask all clubs to PLEASE deal with the issue of Garda vetting for all coaches and mentors within their clubs as soon as possible as the start of the new season is almost upon us once again. To date there has been a poor response to the return of Garda Vetting Forms so I appeal to all clubs to commence the process as soon as possible.

The ruling from the Rules Advisory Committee of the GAA is as follows. There are no circumstances in which a player can legally play football in one county and hurling in another. Obviously this does not apply to players playing with 3rd level college clubs. All clubs are requested to take note of this and abide by same.
