Westmeath G A A Notes By Pat Reilly Westmeath P R O.
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE:
Westmeath senior footballer's played the first round of this year's Div 2 National League last Sunday against Donegal in Cusack Park. On a cold February day in front of a 1700 strong crowd Westmeath played with great heart and determination right from the off and with eighteen minutes gone had a strong five points lead before Donegal scored their first from a free. This score brought Donegal back into the game and from here to the break they outscored Westmeath by four points to one to leave the slimmest margins between the sides at the break 0-06 to 0-05 in favour of Westmeath.
Donegal got the better start to the second period with a goal from wing back Kevin Cassidy in the third minute and from here on in Westmeath seemed to be chasing the game as Donegal seemed to be able to score with greater ease. Early in the second half Westmeath lost Denis Glennon with a shoulder injury and the forwards really lost their shape with the Donegal defence really on top. Westmeath forwards were guilty of some bad shooting with simple scoring chances going a begging, while at the other end full forward Colm Mc Fadden and Michael Murphy in the corner were deadly accurate and the gap began to widen. Ironically Westmeath failed to find their first half form and could only manage to score three points in the second period eventually loosing on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-09
KEOGH CUP HURLING:
Westmeath senior hurlers claimed a position in the final of this year's Keogh Cup last Saturday when the comprehensively defeated Carlow IT in Kinnegad, a team which included some high profile inter-county players. This was another hard working display by Westmeath even after a slight mix-up in defence saw them down by a goal within the first two minutes. Carlow IT were taking the game to Westmeath but fine scores from Carthy in the corner on the fourth, sixth and thirteenth minute meant Westmeath were back in the game. Derek Mc Nicholas replaced John Hardman in the Westmeath attack midway through the half and in the thirty-fourth minute he doubled on a high ball to find the net for the first of our two goals, closely followed by the second from Alan Dowdall to leave the half time score 2-11 to 1-06.
The introduction of Philip Gilsenan to the Westmeath attack at the break paid dividance as within the first minute he had scored the first of five fine points, Westmeath took control of the game and never looked like loosing as Murtagh, Carthy, and Enda Loughlin all contributed further points thus helping Westmeath to a comfortable win on a final score of 2-26 to 1-11 where they will now face Kildare.
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE:
Westmeath senior footballers continue their division 2 national football league campaign next Sunday with very tough fixture away to Armagh. Even though Westmeath were defeated last weekend by Donegal they can approach this game with an air of confidence as their first half display was quite impressive, but they will be to be able to keep up that level of performance for the whole match if they are to have any hope of taking two points. Armagh on the other hand will also be looking for their first points having lost out narrowly to Meath last weekend.
KEOGH CUP FINAL:
Westmeath senior hurlers play Kildare in the final of the Keogh Cup away next weekend This should be an interesting clash as Westmeath, going well at the minute would like another win under their belt and will be hoping to claim their second title in two years. The return of some of the more experienced players to the panel has been a big plus and all going well they should be fit to win, however Kildare having overcome Meath last weekend will not be easy to defeat.
PROPOSED WESTMEATH SENIOR CYCLE FOOTBALL LEAGUE (NON EXAM YEARS)
Following discussions it has been proposed to run a Westmeath Senior Cycle Football League to involve non exam students. (i.e. non Leaving Cert year and post Junior Cert students). This will be open to all schools in Westmeath with the league running after the mid term break and to be completed before Easter. For schools that participate they will be guaranteed two games with the league likely to be divided into two sections - depending on uptake amongst schools.
Michael Mchugh and Noel Delaney will be making contact with all schools in the County this week to discuss schools participation and we will also be taking feedback as to how best to structure the league with a view to giving this age group meaningful games in late February/March.
