St. Marys Notes 28/06/2009
Minors
The minors entertained The Downs on Friday 26/06/2009 in Rochfortbridge. Going into this game with a 100% record, St Marys knew that this would be their biggest test to date. The game started well for St Marys as they dominated possession and scored some great points to take a healthy lead. Then a succession of goal chances presented themselves and were in turn spurned. Instead, The Downs got a goal and then began to settle into the game and as the first half closed they were the team dictating the play. The second half began with The Downs dominating and at one stage they had built up a commanding 5 point lead. It looked like curtains for St Marys, but one thing this team has is character and they dug in and clawed their way back into the game. A courageous goal from Brendan Keegan and a fine point from Eddie Alford tied the game and St Marys held on for a point.
A tough battle this was and it should stand both teams in good stead. St Marys will have learnt from this game and they can go forward and improve from here on.
Final Score: St Marys 1-10, The Downs 1-10.
Panel: Devin Whitstun, Cathal Coyle, Wayne Gahan, Conor Duigenan, Dwayne Leavy, Cian Kinsella, Ger Glennon, Paul Carey, Ray O'Sullivan, Eoin Gorman, Eoin Nugent, Colin Gavin, Paul Rabbitte, Shane Kiernan, Brendan Keegan, Eddie Alford, Paul Plunkett, Declan Lennon, Lee Wallace, Dermot Judge, Jamie Rogers, Dean Darcy, Jordan Reid, P.J. U12s
On the same evening, also in Rochfortbridge, the U12s took on Delvin in a back fixture. St Marys U12s have been on a bit of a roll recently and were hoping to keep up the progress in this game. St Marys took to the field with a few players playing in new positions and were hopeful that the new formation would prove to be successful. The early stages of the game were cagy as both teams felt out the opposition. St Marys drew first blood and then proceeded to notch up some good scores. Delvin tried gallantly to keep in touch but the home defence were protective of their goals and yielded precious little to their opponents. As a result St Marys held a handsome lead at half-time.
The second half was much more even and some great football was played as the game moved from end to end. In the end however, the first half performance proved to be insurmountable and St Marys came out as deserving winners.
This team is now beginning to play with a degree of fluency that was absent in the early games. Further progress needs to be made but with the proper application at training this can be achieved.
