Westmeath G A A Notes By Pat Reilly Westmeath P R O. LEINSTER FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP: Next Sunday Westmeath Footballers will take on Dublin in the Leinster Semi-Final in Croke Park, both sides have one game under their belt and both sides struggled to win however Dublin will be favourites and rightly so as in some peoples eyes they may be All Ireland contenders. Dublin defence faired well in their first match while the forwards struggled and were wasteful in front of goal while Westmeath in their first match availed of every chance they got but their general play was poor and the backs will need to be sharp and focused to contain the pacey Dublin forwards. A big performance from the mid field duo is essential for the forwards to get quick ball and they once again will need to be accurate with their shooting and take every chance they get. Verdict: Westmeath (by a small margin) GREVILLE ARMS SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP: Next weekend see the start of the 2009 championship with four ties down for decision, current county champions Raharney take on Clonkill in what is a rematch of last year's final and while Raharney got the better of Clonkill last time out there could well be a back lash in this one. Lough Lene Gaels will play old rivals Brownstown who were promoted from intermediate and will be hoping to maintain senior status this year but on paper the Gaels look the stronger and going on current form should take the victory albeit by a small margin. Castletown Geoghegan will face up to St. Oliver Plunketts and this has the makings of a lively encounter as both sides move the ball fast and both sides will be hoping to be in the shake up ate the end. The last match pitches old rivals and near neighbours Pollard against the Ringtown. This is one, that from the outset is likely to be a cracker have a major bearing on this year's championship. Castlepollard will feel they can claim the honours, however there is never much between these two sides and with a bit of luck Ringtown may be able to cause an upset. Pollard on the other hand will approach this game as if their life depended on it, and with some new young talent coming through may just have the edge. The role of the club forms a central part of the GAA and in recognition of this every GAA club will have their club crest represented on this wall. The County Development Officers, together with O'Neills are currently collecting all club crests. The co-operation of every club both in Ireland and oversees is key to ensuring that the "Falla na gClubanna" truly represents all GAA clubs, and in this regard I would ask clubs to work with your County Development Officer - Paddy Collins, to ensure club crests is included. The deadline for the collection of crests is June 30 2009. Please have your club crest with Paddy before this date. It is important that all clubs now configure/activate their new e-mail addresses from the gaa as this will be the only form of official communication from 01-07-09, also clubs need to complete the registration of all club members on the official GAA MEMBERSHIP DATABASE ASAP, as we are coming under increasing pressure from CROKE PARK.
