THE BER MURTAGH UNDER 10 TOURNAMENT.
On Saturday last we hosted the U10 Ber Murtagh Memorial Tournament. With 8 teams in attendance we were drawn in a group with Na Fianna Enfield from Meath, Rochfortbridge and Mullingar Shamrocks. Our first game was against Rochfortbridge and we hit the ground running and recorded a good victory. Next up was Mullingar Shamrocks, the lads put in a great effort and won in the end after a real ding dong battle. Na Fianna provided our opposition in our last group game and after another tough battle we lost narrowly but due to the previous results we qualified for the cup semi-final. Here we faced the cup holders Mullingar Shamrocks. After the break we very slow to start and looked like going out of the tournament at the penultimate stage only to hit 4 points on the trot right at the death to edge the game by the minimum and thus qualify for the Final against a strong Coralstown/Kinnegad team. We needed to up our performance considerably from the semi-final and in fairness to the boys they did exactly that. After an extremely hard fought game where both teams gave an exhibition of all the skills of the game we just managed to come out on the right side of the scoreline. On a day when all our players gave their all to try and win back this cup, our 5 players in their last year at this level were presented the cup by Ber's wife Helen on behalf of a very excited team. Thanks to all the teams who came and made it a competitive and entertaining tournament and all the parents and members who supplied the fabulous food and refreshments and dished it out.
