The Garrycastle u10's looked extremely impressive as they overcame the stern challenge of Tubberclair last Tuesday evening in the Castledaly tournament. Spectators were treated to a wealth of skill and determination as the boys in green and red put in a fantastic team performance to defeat the men from Glasson. Another performance like this will be required as Garrycastle prepare to take on Caulry in the second round of group games next Tuesday in Castledaly. A big thank you to all of our supporters who made the trip out to Castledaly last Tuesday evening and we hope to see you all again as we move on through the competition.

On Saturday morning in the Clann na Gael Tournament the boys and girls of Garrycastle represented their club and county magnificently once again as they took on our Roscommon neighbours - St. Brigids and Clann na Gael. We have come to expect nothing less than a terrific performance from this brilliant bunch of players, and once again we weren't disappointed. The boys and girls adjusted to the difficult breeze very well, giving an exhibition in point taking while also remaining extremely tight and secure in the defence. Our two teams (u9's and u10's) dug deep to eventually come out on top of our group, winning three of our four matches. We now look forward to the finals which will take place in the coming weeks. Thanks again to our supporters who came along to cheer on the boys and girls, but a special thanks must be given to the three brilliant u8 players, Erin McHugh, Jack Kilmurray and Darragh Clyne, who were kind enough to join us for the morning when we were unfortunately missing a few members of our panel and who also put in brilliant displays for the team. Our panel for the day included: Conor McCormack, Van McKay, Rian Gaynor, Andrew Henson, Keelan McNamara, Aaron Keegan, James McHugh, Niadh Shine, James Derwin, Jack Dolan, Mairead McBride, Cristean Turean, Jack Dowling, Daniel Stankard, Dylan Moloney, Senan Nugent, Darragh Glennon, Oisín O'Donoghue, Ronan Croughan, Luke Quilty, Louie Shine, Rhys Larkin, Jack Kilmurray, Erin McHugh, Darragh Clyne.

Garrycastle 4-12, Moate All Whites 1-6.
The Garrycastle U12s secured a hard earned win over Moate in their opening fixture of the Jim McHugh tournament. Both teams opened strongly and were exchanging scores right from the start. Garrycastle then enjoyed a dominant spell and worked some well taken scores with Conor Sheehan and Diarmaid Murtagh converting excellent points. Jack Allen then scored a great goal after breaking at pace from midfield. This left the score at 1-7 to 1-4 to Garrycastle at the break.
The second half opened with both teams exchanging scores with Jack Allen converting another goal. Garrycastle utilised all their substitutes and the fresh legs allowed them to pull away from their visitors as the match closed out. There were some excellent points from Jamie Carroll and Sean O' Donoghue and a great goal from Killian Redmond struck from distance that crept under the bar. It was a great start to the tournament for the team.

Rosemount 4-05, Garrycastle 4-11
Round 2 of the Jim McHugh Tournament can only be described as the proverbial game of two halves where Rosemount dominated the first and Garrycastle came back in the second to secure their second win in the tournament. Rosemount playing with the breeze opened strongly and fully capitalised on their chances scoring three goals in quick succession. The Garrycastle defence regrouped and eventually started to get on top with Thanh McCay particularly impressive across the halfback line. This allowed Garrycastle to get some scores with a goal from Jack Allen and points from Sean O'Donoghue and Jamie Carroll to leave the score at 4-3 to 1-4 in favour of Rosemount.
Garrycastle upped their performance significantly in the second half and started to dominate in midfield and the half forwards which allowed the forwards to start getting the scores on the board. There were some excellent passages of play and goals followed with two from Diarmaid Murtagh and another for Killian Keegan. Garrycastle turned to their substitute bench and again the fresh legs made a big contribution to secure the win.
Garrycastle squad: Jake Hanniffy, Conor McCarthy, Con O'Hara, Killian Redmond, Jack Mulvihill, Brian Mulvihill, Thanh McCay, Jamie Carroll, Diarmaid Murtagh, Tom Sheehan, Jack Allen, David Carter, Sean O' Donoghue, Matthew Conor, Killian Keegan, Conor Sheehan, Alphie Broderick, Charlie O'Brien, Nathan McKeon, Oisin Nugent, Cian McCormack , Anthony Mannion, Tom Daly.
U14 Championship
Garrycastle 2-08 Inny Gaels 3-07
Our U14s lost out to Inny Gaels(Bunbrosna/Barrynacargy) in a very competitive and entertaining championship game played Sunday morning in tough conditions due to heavy overnight rainfall. Inny Gaels went in at the break 1-07 to 1-04 ahead. The Garrycastle lads played their best football in the second half getting some excellent scores to take a one point lead going into the last two minutes however due to some wayward shooting they were unable to kill the game off and Inny Gaels struck for a fortuitious goal as the game entered injury time. The lads launched one last attack and were unfortunate to see a last gasp goal bound shot saved on the line. The lads were disappointed to lose a game they should have won and know that the inability to take some scoreable chances cost them dear in the end. The pleasing part of the performance was the whole team worked really hard for every ball and kept going right to the end playing some great football in the process.
Team: Bill Carmody, John McBride, Frank McKiernan, Issac O'Neill, Adam Mulvihill, Peter Mulvihill, Cian McCarthy, Ben Kilkenny, Andrew Ruane, Ben Donegan, Adam O'Neill, Stephen Gaffey, Corey Nugent.
Minor Championship (Division 2)
MULLINGAR SHAMROCKS 4-14 GARRYCASTLE 2-12
Garrycastle minors exited the Division 2 championship when going down to the home side in Springfield last Wednesday evening. The opening exchanges were close with Mullingar Shamrocks getting a perfect start with two points, one from a free and one from open play. However, Garrycastle had 2 points from the boot of Joe Carmody, again one from play and one from a free. The sides exchanged points, Garrycastle scores coming from Eoin Mulvihill and Jack O'Connor to leave it 0-4 each by the mid-point of the first half. However, it was at this stage that Mullingar Shamrock began to dominate possession and Garrycastle were sloppy with theirs, resulting in a scoring spree of four points for the home side. Matters got worse for Garrycastle when a poor hand pass in their defence led directly to a gaol for the home side and Mullingar Shamrocks also added to point soon after. Jack O'Connor had a point for Garrycastle but Mullingar replied with a point of their own. However, Garrycastle finished the half strongly and a point and goal from Jack O'Connor left it 1-10 to 1-6 at the break.
Garrycastle made a determined start to the second half and had a point from Joe Carmody in their first attack. They also created other opportunities for scores but a combination of poor execution and determined defending by Mullingar Shamrocks meant that these were not converted. Mullingar Shamrocks had a point but Brian Ruane responded with a point for his side. However, the home side scored their second goal in the 46th minute to widen the gap between the sides, Yet again Brian Ruane pointed for Garrycastle but Mullingar Shamrock opened up the Garrycastle defence to register their third goal in the 51st minute. Jason Nugent had two points for Garrycastle, one from a free and one from play to narrow the gap. However, a fourth goal for Mullingar Shamrocks left Garrycastle with a mammoth task with only 5 minutes remaining. The Garrycastle lads pressed forward in search of scores and had a goal of their own from Eoin Mulvihill. Mullingar Shamrocks had a point and Joe Carmody pointed a free for Garrycastle. However, the scoring was completed with a pointed free for the home side to leave the final score 4-14 to 2-12 in their favour.
This was a disappointing end to the year for the Garrycastle lads, who had high expectations of progressing further in the championship and building on their impressive performances in the league. They know that they contributed to their own downfall with several errors in their passing and failure to convert a number of good goal opportunities, particularly in the early minutes of the second half. Best on the night for Garrycastle were Robert Kelly, Colm Lynch, Shane Duffy, Brian Ruane, Jack O'Connor and Joe Carmody.
