Tom McGlinchey is setting his sights on league promotion after Waterford captured their first McGrath Cup in 34 years.

The Deise are among the favourites to win promotion from Division 4 of the Allianz Football League following a McGrath Cup campaign that yielded a famous semi-final win over Cork and a nine-point victory over UCC in last Saturday's final.

"It's great to start the year with a victory like this in this competition. It's like a lot of competitions, you enter it and the more you go on it, you want to win it," the Waterford manager said.

"They wanted to win because if they put in a bad performance tonight, after beating Cork, everything would have blown up on us."

McGlinchey was delighted to see nearly 1,000 spectators turn up at Fraher Field for the final.

"We had 337 in Clashmore last week, so that's what, 300 per cent of an increase," he continued.

"If we got another 300 per cent increase next week, it'd be great. It's great to have that support, there's a great pocket here in Waterford of football supporters. It's like Tipperary, or the pocket of hurling-only support in Kerry.

"Without being biased, I think we played good football and if we got those people back, they'd see good football."
