Brian O'Halloran bagged 1-4 from play as Waterford opened their Waterford Crystal Cup campaign with a victory over LIT at Carriganore.

Pauric Mahony also notched 0-10 as Derek McGrath's charges qualified for a quarter-final meeting with Limerick. Mahony struck 0-6 (0-5 from frees) in the first half to give the winners a slender 0-11 to 0-9 lead at the break.

Davy Fitzgerald's Limerick students remained in contention until the 45th minute when sub Jake Dillon and Mickey Kearney combined to set up O'Halloran for the only goal to give Waterford a 1-16 to 0-14 cushion.

LIT cut the gap again to three points with 10 minutes remaining before late scores from Mahony, O'Halloran and substitutes Donie Breathnach and Shane Bennett sealed the Deise's win.
