Kerry 4-9
Shannon Blues 2-15
It was a tough hard game of football that either team could have won in the end. Both sides played their heart out in soggy conditions after heavy rain during the night and morning. Kerry were well on top in the opening half and had a 5 point lead 3-4 to 2-2 after 30 minutes of play. The Blues were on the scoreboard with 2 quick points by Keiran Hurley and Barry O'Dwyer in the 3rd and 4th minutes but did not raise white flag again for the remainder of the half. Kerry lost their center back Lawrence Healy just 30 seconds into the game with a back injury and James Long came on for him. Kerry settled back into the game after this disruption and Robby Croft had his 1st point and Shane O'Connell rocked the Blues with 2 fast goals in the 6th and 8th minutes. The Blues fought back and were awarded a penalty which Trevor Wallace converted. Sean Driscoll had a point for Kerry and at the other end Stephen Enwright produced a point blank save from Darragh Roche only to have Barry O'Dywer send the rebound into the Kerry net. After 16 minutes of play the sides were level at 2-2 each. The Blues failed to score for the remainder of the half thanks to some excellent defending by Kerry whil Kerry added 1-2, 2 frees by Robby Croft and a goal by Phil O'Sullivan who took a pass from Shane O'Callaghan which had all started when David Larkin broke up the field from corner back. As the half time whistle went it was Kerry 3-4 Shannon Blues 2-2.
A different Blues took the field for the second half so they kicked 5 unanswered points and just like that the sides were level at 3-4 to 2-7 all in the space of just 7 minutes of play. Shane O'Callaghan put Kerry one point up but the Blues responded well with points from both corner forwards, Roche and O'Dwyer. Robby Croft kept Kerry in the hunt with 2 points one a free the other hit the post and went over. Croft would then set up Sean Driscoll for Kerrys 4th goal of the game and the sides were level at 4-8 to 2-14. Kerry then seemed to have the game at their mercy with a late point and a chance to go 2 up only to be denied as the Blues broke down the field and scored the equalizer.
No one deserved to lose this hard fought game and settled for a draw of 4-9 to 2-15. This is Kerrys 3rd game in a row where they scored 4 goals which is one for the books.
There will be a mass the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston on Monday June 22nd at 7.00 p.m. in memory of the young J1 students who lost their lives and the survivors of the awful tragedy in Berkelely.
