Boston Kerry go down to Tones

August 04, 2014
Kerry failed to take their chances in Boston going down to the Wolfe Tones 3-11 to 2-10 with early and late goals by the Tones. A goal in the 4th minutes of the game and 2 late goals in the second half were the deciding factor. The opening half was fairly even with the Tones ahead at the half 1-5 to Kerry's 0-6. Lee Carr had the Tones first point after 2 minutes, Graham Glynn had the sides level a minute later. Lee Carr got inside his man shortly after and had the ball in the Kerry net giving Lee Stacey no chance. Graham Glynn had Kerrys next point but the Tones answered with a point before Niall Sheehy answered with 3 points in a row for Kerry, 2 from frees and 1 from play to leave the sides level 1-2 to 0-5 after 16 minutes.

Kerry made poor use of their next 2 possessions, Robby Croft had only the keeper to beat but he shot it right at the goalie and Cathal Hynes cleared the ball up field for the Tones. Kerry were guilty of some poor passing when they had chances of scoring and the Tones added 3 more points, 2 from frees and 1 from play. Robby Croft added a point for Kerry with a 45 to leave 2 points between the sides at the half 1-5 to 0-6.

Simon Dunne replaced Stephen Lucy of Kerry to start the second half. Owen McGreavey opened the scoring for Kerry but Dan McCabe answered for the Tones with 2 rapid points from play in the 5th and 7th minutes. Simon had 2 scorable chance for Kerry but both were side of the mark. Kerry kept attacking and with 3 shots on the Tones, it was third time luck as Roby Croft blasted the ball to the back of the net to leave the sides level at 1-7 each. Niall Sheehys free put Kerry ahead after 15 minutes. Lee Carr had the sides level but0 a pointed free by Robby Croft had Kerry one up again. Lee Carr picked up a yellow card for a foul on Niall Sheehy and tapped over the resulting free but Carr came right back and raised the green flag for the Tones and this was followed by quick point by Dean McCabe. Robby Croft pointed a free for Kerry but it was the Tones that looked the fresher side as the game entered the last few minutes. Dara McVeety added a point to put the Tones up by 4. Both teams added late goals, Kerrys from a late Robby Croft penalty. An important win for the Tones as Kerry will now face Donegal on August 10th in a Quarter Final game. Donegal had a massive win over the Shannon Blues on a score of 4-18 to 2-8 but the Blues and Aiden McAnnespies are into the semi finals while the other four teams have to play next week to see how goes forward to the semi final.

It will be Kerry v Donegal and Wolfes Tones v Connemar Gaels. The month of August promises to be a very exciting time in Boston with no clear favorite this year.
