Rough Weather Grounds the "Rough Field"
February 26, 2010
Club Tyrone may consider investing in a snow-plough after blizzards on the USA's eastern seaboard caused the cancellation of its planned weekend fund-raising trip to Philadelphia and New York.
Events had been organised in both cities to gather support for Tyrone GAA's Garvaghey project, now labelled as "levelling the rough field", a play on the meaning of the Garvaghey town-land name.
"It's disappointing" Hugh Mc Aleer, Chairman of Club Tyrone, admitted. "But our real sorrow is for our Tyrone gaels in America who had worked so hard to put these events on. Even if we'd got there, I believe the weather is so bad it would have affected people's ability to travel to the two events."
The snow caused the effective shut-down of Newark airport, bringing chaos for many travellers.
"We're already planning to reschedule for early May" Hugh Mc Aleer continued. "We intend just to pick up where we left off. Looking round us at Aldergrove Airport this morning, and seeing so many people's holidays and business trips destroyed, put our wee bit of inconvenience in perspective."
"One great thing about the GAA is that there's always another day. We'll get there eventually!" he concluded.
