St Brendans GFC London club notes

Match Report

On a bright sunny Saturday, the first of the Murphy cup semi-finals threw in between St. Brendans and Moindearg. There was a very strong breeze in favour of the team shooting towards the club house and success to the Brendans as early as the first minute when Niall Campbell pointed after a foul on Allen Benson. Barry Llydon doubled the lead following good work from David Dunne and James Minogue made it three after he won and converted the subsequent kick out. Moindearg steadied themselves at this stage, with Shaun Mc Gowan and Michael McMenamin gaining possession in midfield. Solid Brendans defending from Paddy Irvine and the strong breeze meant that it was Brendans who continued the first half scoring, a Benson brace, the second of which was a fine team move involving Shane Healy, Eoin O Leary and Ciaran Mossey. Niall Campbell won and converted a free to move Brendans six clear after fifteen minutes when David Dunne pointed another. Indeed, perhaps a goal was on the cards after he found himself one on one with the keeper after a strong run through the middle after being supplied by Mossey. Denis Murphy landed a point from his half back position. Tenacious defending from Paddy Irvine, blocking a Moindearg attempt led to a lofted point by Tadgy Gavin at the club house goal side to end the half. Half time St. Brendans 0-9 Moindearg 0-0

It was difficult to tell if a nine point lead was enough for the Brendans and Moindearg started to chip at the lead with a Padic Philbin point after two minutes. Alan Dunne converted a free and another point from play from Moindeargs number nineteen, Neil O Shea gave Moindearg there first scores after five minutes of play. Michael Lynch was then booked for Moindearg, but O Shea added another before Moindearg dealt blow to the Brendans by scoring the only goal of the game. A good interception from corner back Robbie Leonard should have been cleared, but Moindearg broke the play with Micheal Lynch converting the three pointer. Another free from Alan Dunne left the scores level with ten minutes to go. Indeed with the strong breeze, it like only Moindearg would win. However, Brendans managed to break the pattern and good team work got the ball to Campbell who setup James Minogue for a point. Indeed minutes later, Campbell had a goal chance, but dragged his shot wide of the post.  Another couple of points from Dunne and O Shea put Moindearg in the lead once again, but the Brendans weren't done. A strong Ciaran Mossey run setup Benson to tie the scores with five minutes to go. Brenadans struck the lead, again the combination of Campbell and Minogue, leading to a pointer for the later. With only minutes to go and still holding a strong wind at their backs, Moindearg held their composure to secure a further two frees, which Dunne converted. While Brendans got the ball forward on a couple more occasions, they just couldn't engineer a final opportunity. Final score St. Brendans 0-12 Moindearg 1-10

It was a fine team performance from the Brendans, and while it's difficult to pick out individuals, Denis Murphy in the first half, Paddy Irvine, Barry Llydon, Ciaran Mossey, James Minogue and Allen Benson excelled.

Congratulations

Paddy Irvine and Caroline Hackett on their recent engagement. Indeed, Paddy being no slouch, whisked Caroline off to romantic Paris. The only trouble was the number of questions Ciaran Mossey asked Paddy before the match at the weekend, like how he planned the trip and where he purchased the ring before the match at the weekend!!!

Best of luck

Best of luck to Noel Devine, who is taking part in the London marathon this weekend.
