Cú Chulainns begin with a victory

March 09, 2010
Cú Chulainns of Newcastle kicked off their Pennine League campaign with a resounding victory against Yorkshire rivals Brother Pearse of Huddersfield in a one sided affair. Early scores from a rejuvenated Terrence Gallagher and Anthony O'Mahony allowed the team from the north to race into an early 5-0 lead before the home side raised their first flag, but after utility man Stephen Mc Kennna clinically finished off a well worked team move to the net from close range midway through the first half the game was effectively over as a contest. However Huddersfield then responded with a goal of there own in a fine counterattacking move spearheaded by Andrew Kitterick and neatly finished by Michael Maguire to leave the scores1-9 to 1-1 at the interval.

The second half started in similar fashion to the first with Cú Chulainns extending there lead with a brace of points from Gallagher, Tully, Gribbon. A late flurry of points and a controversial goal, which reflected the home sides dominance in the midfield in the second half failed to have significant impact on the final score with the Newcastle team running out worthy 1-17 to 2-4 winners.
