Oisin advance to Semi Final
September 08, 2008
Oisin 4-07
St Lawrences 0-09
Oisin advanced to the Lancashire senior championship semi final with 10 points to spare over their rivals St Lawrences. The scoreline doesnt reflect the true nature of the game as St Lawrences battled bravely to the end.The game played in good conditions considering the weather recently was officiated by Barry McGeehan.St Lawrences had revenge on their mind as they suffered a humiliating 23 points defeat a couple of weeks ago in the senior league.
Oisin tempo from the start was extremely fast and from the throw in Tom Hanvey pointed. But within minutes the game started to get out of control with individual battles and niggling ensued and Oisin were reduced to 14 men when midfielder Tom Harkin was shown a straight red.The incident resulted in a goal for Oisin scored by Laois man Richard Coss for which Harkin recieved his marching orders.
Oisin never panicked and with a few adjustments Richard Fleming was dominating midfield with the American showing his class throughout.St Lawrences responded with a Luke Byrne free kick after Ben McQuaid fouled close to the Oisin Goal.Trevor O Grady pointed from 21 yards after an excellent St Lawrences move and good work by Peter Quinn left the Mayo man a simple tap over the bar.
Whilst Oisin were well on top with the 14 men they were committing silly fouls ad Luke Byrne was on excellent for with his freetaking and was punishing Oisin at every opportunity.Further points from Fleming,Joe Quinn and Damian Moane left the half time score at Oisin 1-05 St Lawrences 0-03.
The second half was completely different with Oisin under the cosh and St Lawrences started to pick the tempo up.
Mick Fitzsimons and Gerry Donaghy were winning possession and started to use Shane Golderick and Peter Quinn wisely and this was causing Oisin problems giving away free after free.Luke Byrne pointed a fantastic free from the ground on the restart near the sideline and St Lawrences started to eat up the oisin lead and with 15 minutes to go the teams were level and St Lawrences were on top.
Anthony O Keefe made a very important save at this stage which was goalbound but Byrne put the resulting 45 over the bar.
From this point on it seemed Oisin were running out of steam and had only scored 1 point in the second half.Richard Coss put them a point ahead again.
Then it all fell apart for St Lawrences Richard Coss recieved the ball on the wing and soloed to hit the back of the net and within a minute Ben Mcquaid buried Oisin 3rd goal of the match.
A high speculative ball into the danger area and Coss punched to the top corner leaving Lawrences keeper John Joyce stranded.
Oisin had effectively finished the game in a matter of 4 minutes and were mightily relieved to have got the result.
They will now play St Ann's next Sunday at 1.00Pm.The game is fixed for Turn Moss but this could change as the venue at the moment is water logged. If they are to reach the final against John Mitchells a vast improvement is needed.St Ann's have already beaten Oisin this year in the championship and under the leadership of John Fitz they will go into this game as favourites.
