McElkennon becomes Meath's fourth selector

Martin McElkennon was ratified as a new Meath senior football team selector at the county committee meeting on Monday night.

Tyrone-native McElkennon had been acting as a trainer/coach and now replaces Paul Grimley as a selector. He is a former Cavan manager and the St Ciaran's High School, Ballygawley teacher worked with Mickey Harte at county minor level with the Red Hands back in the '90s, as well as spells with Fermanagh and Cavan.

McElkennon joins Royals' boss Seamus McEnaney, Graham Geraghty and Tom Keague in a management team of two locals and two outsiders.

Such a set-up hardly pleases everybody in Meath and former county board chairman Pat O'Neill wondered why someone from within the county could not have been picked instead, saying, "it's time we started looking after our football."

Chairman Barney Allen asked O'Neill if he was objecting to the appointment and the St Colmcille's clubman said he was not.

Earlier O'Neill suggested that the Gaelic Players' Association should cater for 'ordinary club players' as well as inter-county footballers and hurlers.
