Michaela Foundation established
January 19, 2012
A student fund has been set up by the husband and family of the late Michaela McAreavey in her memory.
The Michaela Foundation will make three awards of £1,000 each to students studying disciplines which the tragic 27-year-old held close to her heart, including religion and the Irish language. Her husband, Down footballer John McAreavey, and father, Tyrone manager Mickey Harte, were in Belfast yesterday to reveal details of the fund.
"I met Michaela in Belfast and we shared our university experience together," John McAreavey said.
"We believed that you could live a full university experience without taking drugs or drinking alcohol. We hope to showcase that to young students."
Michaela's grieving father Mickey Harte said: "We had to create a structure to say these are the standards Michaela lived by and say to young people you can enjoy yourself and stay in a nice position. If you are self-confident, there is no need for any addictives. Tea was Michaela's only addictive."
The Harte family recently marked the first anniversary of Michaela's murder while on honeymoon in Mauritius.
