Sludden returns to action

Louth manager Peter Fitzpatrick appeals with referee Martin Sludden at the end of the game.
Tyrone referee Martin Sludden returned to action at the weekend for the first time since his controversial handling of the Leinster football final seven weeks ago.

Sludden, who was attacked by furious Louth supporters at the final whistle after he failed to disallow Joe Sheridan's last-gasp winning 'goal' for Meath, took charge of a Tyrone SFC quarter-final between Coalisland and Errigal Ciaran on Saturday. The game ended in a one-point win for Coalisland, but there was no repeat of the drama that surrounded his last refereeing assignment in Croke Park.

The Dromore clubman was assisted by the same team of umpires who were on duty during the fateful provincial decider on July 11. Sludden admitted afterwards that he made a mistake and should have disallowed the Sheridan score which denied Louth their first Leinster title in 53 years.
