Politician condemns 'arson' attacks

November 13, 2008
A Northern Ireland politician has made a plea for the arson attacks on GAA and Orange Order facilities to stop immediately as the country continues to work towards peace. SDLP Mid-Ulster Assembly member Tony Quinn was speaking after two clubs in Tyrone were damaged by fire that was started on purpose last weekend. The Edendork and Fr Rocks club's were the subject of the arson attacks, while there has been a couple of Orange Order premises targeted in recent weeks also. It is alleged that loyalists' paramilitaries were responsible for the attacks and that they contacted the UTV newsroom claiming responsibility for the offences. However, Quinn has stressed that this tit-for-tat between the people concerned must stop at once to ensure that community relations remain good. "Community relations are good in Cookstown and that's the way we want to keep things," said Quinn. "Attacks on GAA facilities and those on Orange Order Halls have no place here."
