Edendork clubhouse destroyed by fire

November 09, 2008
A clubhouse in county Tyrone has been totally destroyed by a fire which took over four hours to get under control. Six units of the Northern Ireland fire service were deployed to the scene close to Dungannon where the Edendork facility is based. The fire was reported by a passing local at 5am on Saturday morning and by the time the blaze was under control, the whole clubhouse had been gutted with the roof collapsing and the remaining walls now deemed unsafe. The whole building will have to be raised to the ground but nobody was injured in the incident. "'Everyone is just in shock at the moment," said club chairman Peter O'Connor. "It is very upsetting this is a focal point of the whole community here." It is not yet known how the blaze started and a technical examination took place. The club still managed to host a fixture between Edendork and Pomeroy, after debris was removed from the playing surface. It is the second GAA facility to be destroyed in Ulster by fire in the space of six weeks after St. John's clubhouse in Down was ravaged by fire in September.
