September 30, 2008
An Mhaigh Tír na nÓg G.A.C. Notes Welcome Sam Maguire! Living the dream. That is what every An Mhaigh and Tir Eoghain Gael has been doing since 5.00pm on Sunday 21st September, 2008. Mickey Harte and his Red Hand heroes have re-wrote the history books once again and achieved true greatness in the world of GAA. We salute them for having brought so much joy and happiness to the O'Neill County. This latest triumph against Kerry, resulting in a third All-Ireland SFC title for Tyrone, was arguably the sweetest of all successes. Of course, the feeling in Moy is still one of immense pride as four of our club representatives played a huge part in the Croke Park showdown and subsequent recapturing of the famous Sam Maguire Cup. Philly Jordan was once again outstanding at wing half back and fully deserved his recent All-Star nomination. Ryan Mellon was a late call-up to the starting team and impressed from the outset at wing half forward, scoring a superb point early in the second half. Sean Cavanagh produced another Man of the Match display at full forward, top scoring with five fabulous points from play, while his younger brother Colm crowned a truly memorable day by coming on as a second half substitute and scoring the final point in this year's championship. An Mhaigh Tír na nÓg G.A.C. extend heartiest congratulations to our four county senior stars and the entire squad and backroom team on this remarkable victory. Tyrone are certainly worthy All-Ireland champions and we applaud everyone concerned for their sterling efforts throughout 2008. Sam Coming to Moy The Sam Maguire Cup will be making a special appearance in Moy Square this Sunday night (5th October) from 8.30pm to 9.00pm. Among the guests of honour will be Moy's four All-Ireland winning stars. Everyone is welcome to come along and give our county heroes a great reception! More All-Ireland Glory Hail the Tyrone minors who completed an historic All-Ireland double for our county when defeating Mayo in last Saturday's thrilling final replay at Pearse Park, Longford. Those Moy Gaels who were privileged to be in attendance at the game celebrated another famous triumph and the return of the Tom Markham Cup to Tyrone. We congratulate this very special group of young Red Hand footballers and their management team on emulating the feat of their senior counterparts and making this a truly momentous year for the O'Neill County. Let's all celebrate 2008 - a year in which our minor and senior footballers have been crowned All-Ireland Champions. Centenary Gala Night The Sam Maguire Cup will be an added attraction at our club's 2008 Centenary Gala Night in the Armagh City Hotel on Saturday 22nd November. Only a handful of tables remain on general sale for this special celebratory event as hundreds of Moy Gaels living at home and abroad have already accepted their invitations to attend. All outstanding applications and monies should be forwarded to any member of the An Mhaigh G.A.C. Executive Committee without delay. The cost of a ticket is priced at £100 per person or £1000 per table. It is a night not to be missed as this Black Tie Gala Dinner will be a celebration of 100 years of gaelic games and culture in Moy and the parish of Clonfeacle. Proceedings will commence at 6.30pm with a drinks reception at the entrance to the Fisher Suite, followed at 7.00pm by the official launch of our Centenary Book which will document over 100 years of the club's history. The night will continue with a carefully selected five course meal, after which a number of unique items will come under the hammer in our Grand Auction. Part proceeds from the auction will be donated to our chosen charity, The Newry Hospice. Music will be provided afterwards by the ever popular Manhattan. Among the many special guests in attendance will be GAA President Nicky Brennan, Tyrone County Board Chairman Pat Darcy as well as our four All-Ireland winning heroes. Master of Ceremonies for the night will be Gerry Donnelly, former P.R.O. for the Derry County Board. Kilmacud Sevens An Mhaigh were one of 48 high profile clubs from across the country in action at this year's O'Neills Kilmacud Crokes All-Ireland Football 7-a-side competition. Played on the eve of the All-Ireland Senior and Minor Football Finals, this prestigious sevens tournament once again provided great entertainment for everyone in attendance. A sizeable number of Moy people made their way to the capital early on All-Ireland Final weekend to see the Tír na nÓgs in action. This was our third consecutive year to take part, having reached the semi-finals in 2006 and quarter-finals in 2007. Despite missing four of our top players, who were involved the following day at Croke Park, Moy's ten-man squad still did their club and county proud against top quality opposition. First up for An Mhaigh on a glorious sunny day were Derry Senior Club champions Glenullin. Moy took an early lead but it was the Bradleys and co who emerged victorious on the first step of an impressive run which saw them reach the final. All of Moy's group one games took place at the main playing fields in Glenalbyn. Close encounters followed against Gracefield (Offaly) and Tarbert (Kerry). Unfortunately, though, the Moy men lost narrowly in both games. Although disappointed not to reach the knock-out stages, An Mhaigh did compete well in the group and produced some fine football in front of a large number of spectators. Moy's squad consisted of the following players: Niall Conlon, Francie McQuade, Karol McQuade, Ryan O'Neill, Brendan Kelly, Philip McQuade, Mark Jordan, Anthony Rafferty, Tommy Conlon and Padraig Laverty. Senior ACL Division 2 An Mhaigh 0-13 Eadan na dTorc 0-8 Last Sunday saw An Mhaigh senior footballers make a welcome return to league action for the first time in three months when they played host to Edendork in Division Two. Moy's last competitive game was against Moortown in the championship back in early July and, while it did take some time for the players to blow off the cobwebs, the home team produced a solid second half display to win by five points. Edendork may be rooted to the foot of the Division Two table but they certainly pushed Moy all the way in a tough contest, played in fine conditions at Pairc Thír na nÓg. This hard-earned result sees Mattie McGleenan's men climb back into third position, behind joint leaders Clann na Gael and Trillick, and provides a timely boost ahead of this weekend's Intermediate Championship quarter-final clash against Eskra. The men in blue showed no early signs of rustiness as they raced into a three point lead after only five minutes, with Sean Cavanagh converting a free-kick almost straight from the throw-in and younger brother Colm scoring twice from play. Edendork, playing against the wind, did well to draw level by the end of the first quarter and they remained in contention throughout the half despite further Moy scores from the boot of Sean Cavanagh (2) and Karol McQuade. Half-Time: An Mhaigh 0-6 Edendork 0-5. The second half began with an early exchange of points from Moy debutant Peter Mallon and the Edendork place-kicker. However, three well struck Sean Cavanagh frees succeeded in putting some daylight between the sides by the end of the third quarter. Although the homesters were the better team in this half and consolidated their advantage with further points by substitute Neil Donaghy and two cracking efforts from Anthony Rafferty, our opponents will look back on a number of wasted opportunities in this game. Over the hour, Edendork struck twelve wides to Moy's five. Final Score: An Mhaigh 0-13 Edendork 0-8. League Record: Played 9, Won 7, Drawn 0, Lost 2, Points 14. Remaining Fixtures: v Trillick (home); v Clann na nGael (away); v Derrylaughan (home); v Dungannon (away); v Eskra (away); v Gortin (home). Under 16 Championship Droim Ratha 2-8 An Mhaigh 3-9 Moy Under 16 team upset all the odds on Saturday 20th September to defeat favourites Drumragh away by four points in the Grade Three Championship Quarter-Final replay. This was a stunning victory for the Tír na nÓg lads who played some terrific football and displayed wonderful character throughout a high-scoring contest. Moy, who are clearly determined to retain the title they won in such marvellous fashion last year, can now look forward to a last four meeting with Brackaville. For more information on Under 16 training and matches, contact Martin Deeney, Paul Dynes or Paud Loughran. Under 12 Tournament An Mhaigh Under 12 footballers rounded off their season by travelling to Lurgan last Saturday and taking part in the annual Clann Eireann G.A.C. Tournament. Team mentor Martin Conroy was full of praise for the manner in which this tournament was run off and issued the following report: "We found ourselves competing against the host club and two county Down teams in Burren and Kilcoo. We played 'A and 'B' games against each of these clubs. In the first game, Moy 'B' team defeated Burren 'B' by 4 points to 3. Our 'A' team then won by a similar margin, getting the better of Burren on a scoreline of 6-5. "Clann Eireann provided our opposition for the second 'B' match with the Armagh side winning 6-2. Moy 'A' then took to the field against the same opposition and what followed was probably the best performance our team has ever produced at this level. They simply blew the Armagh boys away with a devastating display to win the match 10-5. Ryan Coleman was unmarkable, scoring six points, and this against the team that had won our own tournament in Moy three weeks earlier. "Kilcoo 'B' team then beat our lads 6-1 in the final 'B' match, a disappointing performance from Moy who suffered from a lack of confidence all day. It was then the 'A' teams of both clubs who faced a winner-takes-all-match with the losers going home and the victors qualifying for the cup semi-finals. We should never have worried because Moy had too much class for the Down boys, defeating them on a scoreline of 7-3. "St Endas from Glengormley had come through six matches in the other section, winning every game by at least seven points, so we knew we were up against it. Our 'B' team took the field first and turned in what was their best performance of the day, holding the opposition to a 3-3 draw. Moy's tackling and team-work was a major factor in that contest. This left the 'A' game finely poised, with the winners set to reach the final. "Moy's 'A' team played against the wind in the first half and turned around just 3-2 in arrears. Our boys knew they could win, but in the second half some disgraceful behaviour from the opposition manager (verbally abusing two Moy players and time- wasting) clearly affected Moy's performance. With three minutes of time wasted due to this unfortunate behaviour, we could not register an equalising score to send the game to extra time. "However, despite this loss, the Moy players should be proud of themselves for what they achieved. They were a credit to the club with their behaviour and footballing skills. With a little more luck, they could even have won this tournament." Forthcoming Fixtures ? Under 16 Championship Semi-Final: An Mhaigh v Brackaville this Saturday (4th October) at 11.00am.
