Michael Ryan has been given the green light to succeed Eamon O'Shea as Tipperary senior hurling manager at the end of next season.

In an unusual move, the current assistant manager was recommended for the role last Sunday after it was confirmed that next season would be O'Shea's last at the helm, and the appointment was ratified at last night's county board meeting in Thurles.

Ryan, from the Upperchurch/Drombane club, has served as O'Shea's right-hand man for the past two years, and was also part of Liam Sheedy's management team when Tipp last won the Liam MacCarthy Cup in 2010. As a player, he won an All-Ireland senior medal in 1991.

Ryan will remain as assistant manager for 2015, with Paudie O'Neill and Declan Fanning making up the remainder of O'Shea's management.

Also last night, TJ Connolly and Liam Cahill were reappointed as U21 and minor hurling managers, but no appointments were made to the football teams. However, it's almost certain that Peter Creedon will continue as senior football manager.
