U-10 - Monday & Wednesday Training is now over until the City League Competitions.
The Community Games U10 team faced Castlebar in the Connacht Finals preliminary round on July 9th in Castlebar, unfortunately Castlebar ran out comfortable winners in the end and go on to compete in Connacht Finals, we wish them the best of luck. Saturday Morning Coaching continues for all U-10 players.
U-16 - Our next match is against Buninnadden on 7th August. Training continues on Friday at 6.30pm.
U-18 - The past week was a tough one for our minors with 2 must win games in 3 days. To finish 2nd in our group and qualify for the league final we had to win both games.
On Monday 7th July we took on Castleconnor in near perfect conditions in Kent Park. Castleconnor settled first and took some lovely scores. Eventually our lads settled and slowly began to assert themselves on the game. The half time score was 1-4 to 6 points to Castleconnor. Following the break our half backs stepped up a gear and gave us a platform to launch our attacks from. Castleconnor were not lying down and at the full time whistle, we were just one score ahead, fortunate for us that score was a goal. 3-8 to 2-8.
Wednesday 9th saw us take on Geevagh in a winner take all match. Whoever won this qualified for the league final. Conditions couldn't have been more different from 2 days previously. The rain was very heavy and the wind quite strong. Geevagh adapted quickest to the conditions and at half time were in a commanding position going in to the dressing rooms. They led 4-4 to 1-4, a nine point cushion. Worse was to follow with Geevagh getting the first 2 points of the 2nd half to lead by eleven points. Then when all looked lost, this tremendous young team produced a comeback and a display that will live with them and the few spectators who had braved the elements for a long long time to come. They took control in all the key areas and scored 14 points to Geevagh's one to end up winners on a score line of 4-9 to 4-7. Best performers for Mary's were Mark McGoldrick, James Thompson, Mark Herrity and Stephen Hargadon. Training continues on Mondays and Fridays at 6.30pm. The league final will take place on Wednesday 23rd July in Tubbercurry at 6.45pm. Our opponents will be Bunninnadden.
VHI Cul Camps
The VHI Cup Camps took place last week in Kent Park, all the kids enjoyed the week immensely thanks to all the coaching staff.
Camogie
A welcome new dimension to the club is the commencement of Camogie in St. Mary's for the last few weeks after a lapse of over 20 years. Great credit goes to Mairin Laffey, Michael O'Broin and team of helpers. Over 20 girls have registered and are currently in training so hopefully we will see competitive matches for the team in the years ahead.
Saturday Morning Coaching
Every Saturday Morning between 10:30am and 12pm football coaching takes place for boys and girls aged between 5 and 12. These children are brought through a coaching session that teaches the basic skills required for Gaelic football together with co-ordination and some basic fitness skills. We are fortunate to have very competent and enthusiastic coaches who impart their knowledge weekly. Each session also has a fun element built in and the children love this. We are aware that there are some children and parents in our community that may not know that these coaching sessions take place. We would encourage parents to bring their children along to these Saturday morning sessions and hopefully your children will enjoy the coaching and want to come back. If you want further information, contact Adrian Muldowney (087-6181215) or Francis Fidgeon (087-2282218).
Senior/Intermediate
Our Senior team finished their Division 2 League campaign with a win over Drumcliff at Kent Park on Sunday evening. Played in perfect conditions, the home side started brightly and missed a couple of chances before the visitors got the games first score with a good long range point from play. Mary's responded with scores from Mark Breheny, the lively Gary Melly and David Caffrey, and with Mark Butler and Michael Hanley getting the upper hand around the middle, the half time score was St. Mary's 0-6 Drumcliff 0-1. The home side started the second half brightly with Breheny extending our lead with a free. However, the visitors went on to dominate the ten minutes that followed scoring four points in succession and also missing a penalty following a brilliant save by net minder, Brian Collery. This spurred the home side into action once again, and with Johnny Davey and Gary Melly making incisive runs from deep, we went on to score eight unanswered points to win on a scoreline of St. Mary's 0-15 Drumcliff 0-5. Best performers for Mary's were, Johnny Davey, Mark Butler, Michael Hanley, Gary Melly and substitute Donnacha Gallagher.
Our Intermediate team play Ballisodare at home tonight (Wednesday) at 8pm in the final
round of the Division 4 League. Training for both Squads continues this week. It is vitally
important that all players attend with preparation for the recommencement of the
Championship continuing.
Club Meeting
There will be a meeting of the Club Executive on Tuesday 22nd July at 9pm in the clubhouse.
