Nicky Rackard Cup round-up

July 13, 2008
Non Ards (South Down), Monaghan, Longford and Sligo all enjoyed wins in Saturday's Nicky Rackard Cup ties. Newcomers Non Ards staged a strong second half recovery to beat Fermanagh by 4-15 to 2-13 at Enniskillen and seal their place in the knockout stages. A Sean Corrigan goal helped the home side to a 1-10 to 0-5 interval lead and a second major from the same player just after the resumption strengthened their position. But four goals in an amazing 10-minute period from Karl Maxwell, Liam Morgan, Alan Higgins and Eoin McGuinness turned the game on its head as the visitors went on to record a convincing win. A last-gasp pointed free from Bernard O'Brien handed Monaghan a 0-19 to 1-15 victory over Donegal at Clones, despite some confusion over the final score on the referee's part. Monaghan were quickest out of the starting blocks and led by 0-5 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. But the visitors fought back to trail by the minimum at half-time. Donegal looked set for victory when top-scorer Kevin Campbell grabbed the only goal early in the second half, but Monaghan quickly regained their composure and took the spoils right at the death. Longford put the disappointment of last weekend's defeat to Fingal behind them when they edged out Louth by 0-15 to 0-13 at Pearse Park. Declan Canning shot four excellent points for the winners, while Neil Casey also put in a strong showing as Mattie McLoughlin's charges shaded a keenly-contested affair. At Pairc na hEireann in Birmingham, Sligo secured their second win of the campaign with a 1-15 to 2-10 win over Warwickshire. The home side led by 1-6 to 0-6 at half-time thanks to a Wayne Healy goal and although Enda Barron added another major on the restart, Sligo were not to be denied and made sure of the win when Keith Raymond fired to the net.
